H4895
I would have to go with a black powder. It is about the most versatile powder around. App bp era handguns and rifles and all modern straight wall cartridges would be a breeze and I am sure I could load it into most bottle necks also. As a side note I may need to try and see if I can get my 300blk ar to cycle on black powder (probably a bad idea).
I bought 50 pounds of wc 852 when Clinton got elected, from Pat McDonald. It will make almost any caliber go bang. Maybe not a first choice, but not a bad one and I think it was around 5.00 a pound. The 860 was about half that.
I agree with DX250 if I only have one, I want one that will work for handgun, rifle and shotgun. Black is the only one that works for all. As everybody knows at one time there was "only one powder". Lol
But mom....
During the shortages I found I liked titegroup it was available and worked well in pistols. But I really had to scrounge to find useful powders. Tried BL-C(2) and yes it worked but I found letting the ammo sit in the sun at the range changed the power noticeably.
All I can say is since I can now purchase 8# jugs of desirable powders and do not have to be limited to a single choice I bought in quantity > 10# :
Unique
4895
Varget (couple of auto loaders love that powder)
Titegroup (left over from when it was what I could get might be little less than 10# worth)
2400 (also probably short of 10# but not by much)
That 2400 works in pistol and there are some decent loads for the rifle as a plinking load.
All the posts about Red Dot have me thinking maybe I should look into it a bit more.
I can't help but think that there is a need for a rifle, pistol, and maybe auto load rifle and/or shotgun powder. So 3 or maybe 4 powders is realistic for stocking a pantry. Being able to get multiple calibers from one powder is nice but why cast and carefully reload if one is going to use a powder that is sub par for that application?
For one powder I guess Unique but man has to think about the holy black, would hate to give up C&B or ML and it can do rifle in a pinch, revolver is no problem for the black.
How about I just stock up so I don't have to worry about running out? :-)
I would not deal well with that
Blue Dot.
I can load anything I have from 9mm to 44 mag to 223 to 30-06
to 45-70 and everything in between and have done it.
And produce very accurate and powerful enough loadings
producing 80% of max velocity in rifle cartridges if needed easily.
Blue Dot is a FAR under appreciated universal powder.
I think it's much better than Unique. And not one bit
position sensitive. No "filler" needed or desired.
I get nervous if my stash goes below 5 pounds.
dxr
It would be between Bullseye and Win. 231..... And Black Powder!
H4895 for Rifle and Titegroup for handgun will cover everything I shoot.
But thankfully I don’t have to settle on just one.
2400 absolutely for me....purely for nostalgia reasons, and because I have burned it way more than any others. I wore out my first 3 screw Ruger 44 loading with my first actual press, a Lyman Spartan and 2400 loads. I guess I may have been influenced by Elmer Keith! It was a big step up from hammering by hand with a Lee Loader. A school friend of mine and I would spend all week loading on that old Lyman, and then go out on the weekends and just burn up that old Ruger. And when I got my first Lyman 55 measure, it got even better. Even though I use many powders, and there are others better than 2400, maybe?, it is still my go to powder in 44 mag and 357, and when I finally got a Freedom Arms 454, guess what, it worked just great in it and made big ole one hole groups at 25 yds with it. Just give me my 2400, I'll make it work....
I suppose 2400 for me as well. I only load for my 480 Ruger but know how versatile it can be
2400 is my pick great powder in my 357/308/45-70
I pick Red Dot (Promo) because its so versitile. Oh wait, real BP would probably be my bestest 1st pick.
Unique, good for rifle, pistol and shotgun loads. Gp
Real black powder
Whereas I can use wholly black in all of my straight walls. I can use red dot in almost everything so it's red dot.
(Unless it had to be homemade)

Unique! hands down! one of the oldest and most versatile powders. Good for 30-06, 9 mm, 9x18 Makarov, 45, shotguns, and on and on ... not necessarily the best metering but so what. In just pistols I use a lot of win231/HP-38 (same Powder difference label)
Blackpowder is the only choice that can feed my 54 ML,45ML, 45-70, 32-20, 25-20 and 12g. It would be interesting to see black in the modern stuff like 30-30 and 6.5 swede.
If it had to be smokeless than being in OZ only ADI powder around sooooo Trail Boss. Can use in hornet up to 45-70.
What Poppy said. Second choice would be Bullseye.

I would probably agree with 2400. Not so much for auto-loader pistols, but it's wildly versatile.
