Refrigerant cylinders, empty of course. Thicker 410A cylinders make a more satisfying sound and hold up a little longer. Depending on the range and cartridge they can catch the rounds as an added bonus.
Membership only range, Savage NRA 1919 Match rifle. Nothing but paper targets allowed.

I really enjoy shooting steel in the back yard from my deck. Lately my favorite is shooting a nice old 1924 vintage Winchester PreA M52 .22 at a 65 yd steel plate. All the distance that I can get from my deck. It’s got a terrific trigger and nice Lyman sights. But I might be getting a bigger piece of property soon so I’ll be able to extend my steel range a bit.

Steel bullseye targets and dualing tree.
And clays for the shotgun.
Love it.
Archeological dig here,
We started using the butts from electric poles for our verticals.
Doubled 2x6's for the cross pieces. The cross pieces usually last as long as the rubber belting.
When we used 4x4's for the verticals we were luck to get a year out of them. The Edison poles have been in 8-10 years and they have years of life left. And they're free for the asking.
Target mounting material is 1/2" thick by 4' wide rubber belting from the local stone quarry, again, free for the asking.
We also have a section for reactive targets, my favorite is an oxygen cylinder cut in 1/3's. Top and bottom ring like a bell. 470 N.E. with cast can give a good 10 seconds of boooooing.

Mostly a paper puncher here. I like the good and bad shots recorded for me.
I will shoot some steel on club ranges that have it, but to be truthful I get bored if ringing them with regularity. If that the case it needs to be further away or a smaller size.
I make targets out of unserviceable STEEL scuba tanks. They are about head size and have a nice sound when hit. Pistol only though. Rifle targets sre made from old grader blades.
My friends show up at my backyard range and love to shoot my dueling trees! Just finished my 10 target 22 RF tree. The swing targets are 3" in diameter and swing when hit with a 22 pistol or a rifle. Also have a 9mm/38 Special tree and a 44/45 tree. They work great and hope no one shoots a 223 Those little high speed pills drill a hole right through my plates.
If my .22 rifles are along, and they usually are, I love shooting shale chips off-hand on the backstop with my Marlin 39A, Remington 581, or my Remington 121 Fieldmaster.
I like the instant gratification you receive from shooting steel !!
Mostly paper and steel plates now days. The range is VERY particular about what we set up at the berms. I have to say that my all time favorite was shooting the old TV's that I'd find at the dump as a teen. Those CRT's really blew (or imploded to be more accurate) when you nailed them. Too bad they were a "one shot" target.

Ammo & targets!
Went to a dynamite shoot once. That is about as fun as it gets.
