Nice, i hope to take mine again hog hunting soon.
I used Remington "Super Match" loaded with the 175g MatchKing bullet to establish the GSR is capable of today. I found out a few things, mainly that it shoots better than I am capable and that she is a dirty girl in that she doesnt like a clean barrel as both "clean" bore groups were over an inch. I called the flyer on both of these, even with the flyers it boosts my confidence in the little carbine. The numbers written on the targets are the group size including the flyers.

Today was COLD, I didnt realize how cold I was until I got in the truck to leave and began to warm up. All in all though I think IMR 4064 needs some more looking into.
Last two groups of the day. I really had to fight to keep everything steady on the second to last group (left). Knowing I was done for the day I put everything aside and slung up to fire the last (right) group. Barrel wasn't allowed to cool, I wasn't shooting for speed but as soon as the crosshairs settled on the target a round went downrange. The primers were just beginning to crater so I think I'll back a few tenths and load up a bunch to do some more testing with.

Not sure what is was today but all day shot #3 was the one that gave me the most troubles.

Number 2 for the ruger ,definitly liking the GSR for hunting
IMR 4064 is on the data card for M118LR. It is great 308 powder.
I loaded 22.0 grains of SR4729 Lg Rifle primer then loaded my RCBS 190 Grain FP GC 10 shot string I had average velocity of 1981 FPS very accurate at 75 yards. Great gun very Versitility.
We're now over 700 replies and right at 4 years for this thread. The hits just keep coming.
Something tells me that this gun is a winner!

I just started shooting mine again. Didn't remember how hard it was to get Lyman Super Molly out of the barrel. Seems like it took for ever to get it all out!!!!!
well this is my second one and I think Ruger got this right This gun loves boolits and or jwords iris flexible in application and as shoot able as any gun I own.
So, to revive an old thread, is it worth the buy??? Hahaha
XS: the .223 version is identical to the .308 version except for the bolt face, the hole in the barrel and a plastic sleeve in the magazine to make it smaller.
The reason the gun is heavier is because the hole in the barrel is smaller. so there is more metal left on the barrel.
Will be talking to Mark Gurney at the SHOT show in a week or so and push the .300blk version.
Randy
Has anyone handled the polymer stock version. It looks to drop the weight closer to Cooper's original spec....how does it handle?
Yes, shot one a few weeks ago, nice gun, nice crisp trigger, nice to carry...not to long not to heavy.
45 2.1: they are currently not listing a 18" bbl for anything but .308 cal. They do have a Lefthand SS .223 with 16" bbl.
Only Right hand .308's with composite stocks, 16" bbl and it appears to be nearly a pound lighter than the other guns with laminate stocks.
Don't know about 5 rnd Mags or the .300blk. But will try to find out.
Randy
Naturally, what I want is the 18" in composite....maybe someday.
One thing you all would find out if you became manufacturers is that people always want something different than what you make. One blatant example at the show was the VZ Grip Companie's display that was literally 20 feet long and 4 feet high covered with literally hundreds of 1911 grips of every configuration imaginable.
There was a long line of people standing there asking for different models! I couldn't believe it!
I had a long talk with Mark Gurney and one of the other techs about the .300 BLK Scout Rifle. It is being carefully tested and evaluated and they are very leery about producing it.
As most of the more seasoned shooter here know, no .30 rifle is going to stabilize a 200+ gr bullet at 1000 fps. And being a "Suppressed Sniper" would be a primary motivator for many wannabes to buy this gun. The guns performance would be poor and guess what? Ruger would get blamed for it. You have already seen this with the Mini 14, where people simply expected too much from the gun. The gun could be made to perform with 125 to 150 gr bullets but even then the performance would be marginal simply because there simply isn't enough case capacity to push a bullet to a decent velocity. There is literally no advantage to this round over a .308 in a bolt gun. In an AR,,, maybe?
As a result Ruger introduced the Ruger American Rifle in .300BLK at the show this year in an effort to test the waters and not besmirch the already stellar record of the Scout which has become one of Rugers most successful models. If the .300 BLK American Rifle shows any interest they may advance the idea to the Mini 14. Which frankly would be the best platform for the round anyway.
I personally see no use for a .300BLK Bolt Action Rifle, and only limited usage for a Semi Auto. That's just me.
The general consensus on the .300 BLK among most manufacturers, and I heard this from no less than 5 major manufactures, is that the .300 Blackout is a Passing Fad.
This is the reality of producing something by a large company,,, They aren't interested in selling a few guns, they need to sell thousands of guns to justify any new models.
Kel-Tec has produced 500 SU16 rifles in the last year and sales have been sluggish. As a result they are phasing out the product and no more will be made.
I talked to several other outfits at the show who are already producing .300 BLK rifles, all of them were on AR platforms, and all are very limited production. The general consensus was the same everywhere. FAD.
Main problem with the round is there is very little factory made ammo in this caliber. This is usually a deal breaker, and usually the demise for any factory made gun produced in that caliber. Also I was told by two outfits that had done extensive testing with the ammo that is available that extreme spreads in Velocity were as much a 2-300 FPS !!!
Most of us here hand load our own ammunition and could probably get better results than the average Shmo, but we are not the ones who would bad mouth the gun on the internet. The "Tommy Tactical's" who only shoot factory ammo cuz their Glocks would blow up if fired with Cast Boolits, are the ones who would be a problem.
I will keep on this subject and relay what I find out. I needed to talk to Mark further on the subject but couldn't get to him on the last day. When I do get ahold of him I will let you guys know.

It's interesting to see talk of a Scout in 300blk. I used to really want a .300blk bolt gun. When I did the math on picking up a Savage Axis, and a barrel, and anything else I might need to make it happen, I was getting towards the Scout's price range. I was also thinking that if I wanted to lob heavy boolits at sub-sonic speed, I could always load my .308's down. However, I can't load .300blk up to anywhere near .308.
Then I found a lefty, stainless 18" Scout on Gunbroker new in the box, and that was that. I've messed around loading up some .300blk boolits with charges light enough to keep them sub-sonic. They were accurate enough to hit gongs at my range, and I just haven't had time to chrony them or put them on paper. I don't feel any real desire to build a .300blk bolt gun. I still like my .300blk AR because it runs my 150gr cast supersonic loads well. That's really my favorite part of that gun, it's an AR that's easy to cast and load for. Maybe someday I'll be able to get a suppressor and give me more interest in slow heavy boolits.
I thought about picking up an American in .300blk "for the girlfriend." However, I got her shooting cast loads in my Scout, and she was shooting it very well. Then when she shot up all my cast loads, I gave her a magazine full of factory 147 FMJs. The recoil didn't bother her, and she wanted more. The only problem is that the bolt handle is on the wrong side for her. And now she wants me to take her hunting. There's really no sense in getting her a .300blk or 5.56 bolt gun IMO since she can shoot .308 well. We got a great laugh when my hunting buddy heard she wants to hunt and to get her own rifle. He started in about how .308 is too much gun, and that he hates putting up with the recoil in a .308.
I may just be in the market for a stainless righty Scout before long. Then I'll really have to cast and coat and load boolits.
I have the XS rail and a 1-4x scope in low RRW rings. I want to put the scope a bit further forward, but it'd hit the peep sight if I did. I guess I need to get slightly taller rings. That should help with bolt clearance too. I still love that gun.
