Very cool! What a beautiful area!

Well guys, keep your fingers crossed for me because I am in serious danger of losing the cabin to fire.
A new fire is within 2 miles of the place and the fire fighters are too busy with two larger fires further south to be able to pay attention to the one close to my place.
ATR
atr, prayers sent for the fire to completely miss your cabin. I'm in Flagstaff, AZ and year before last we had a huge fire within a half mile of our house. It was raining down burnt pine needles and bits of burning embers onto our home. Wildfires are scary business, and once again I pray for a good outcome for you.
Sounds like a great hike to a beautiful place, ya done good.
my cabin survived the Muckamuck Mountain Fire !!!!
I could not believe it. Thanks for your prayers

the forest is totally destroyed. nothing but ash and cinders. the trees all look like burnt out match sticks. I would post pictures but this site is so restrictive that none of my photos will fit.

That cabin looks to have a few improvements in the time passed since this thread began. Good luck to you. Hopefully you can keep going to it for many more years.
ATR, I've been following you and your cabin from the beginning and enjoy your pics and posts. Very glad it survived the fire. Hopefully you'll have a lot of new growth and wildlife around there this spring. Fair Winds.
I got up to the cabin for 2 weeks; the last week of June and the first week of July. there was a surprising amount of rain, in fact the creek flooded and washed out the dirt road to my place. I spent a full day with the chain saw clearing debris and fallen trees, and then the next day myself and the operator of a JD350-C bulldozer moved the large boulders and rocks that the stream had left blocking the road. The town of Conconully faired badly: The mud flow from Salmon creek moves houses off their foundation, buried cars in mud up to the tires, buried many of the streets in mud and totally wiped out the state run campground. It was a 100+ year rain storm. There are many pictures on the internet and the event was reported on national news. Here are a couple of photos I took of the dirt road that got washes out at my place.

I was at my place in the first 3 weeks of October. Beautiful weather; sunny and cold. Spent alot of time removing dead trees. Managed to burn out one old chainsaw. What was very interesting was the presence of a cougar. Third night I was there the critter gave a scream right outside next to the window where I was sleeping. I measure the tracks next morning and I think it was probably a juvenile, not full grown. There were also a half dozen free range calves around and I suspect the cat was trying to line one up for dinner. I know it stayed around the area because a week later it came back and again screamed right outside the cabin.
I am hoping to hike in early in the new year, weather permitting.
great looking location... you just keep on keeping on young chap. as others have said, use it or will loose it. the close encounter with bear had me sitting on edge of seat reading it... it must be an awesome place to just "be there" and enjoy all of Gods creations....
Beautiful; just Beautiful. Reminds me of when I was younger, I look at 70 in the rear-view mirror, snow shoed, drove dogs, lived off the land when a kid.
Miss that way of life. Lived with a timber wolf for many years, he was a good being, a good family member.
Thank You for sharing.
Good for you.
Glad to hear you are still making it up there.

this is what the paved road leading up to the mountains where the cabin is looks like 11-21-2022, 3 ft of snow.
After about 25 miles of paved road I hit the dirt road then another 3 miles to the cabin. The mountains I head for are in the background of the picture
OK guys....I'm 75yrs and 9 month and I hiked up to the cabin on 2-4-2023. Age is taking its toll and I think this was the last time I could do this hike. Kellen, my son, and I started out with light 15LB backpacks and it took us 3-1/2 hrs going up hill all the way to get to the cabin. I had to drop my pack about 500 yds from the cabin as I could not go further with it, my endurance was at its limit. I have a hole in my heart and the doctors have told me that up to 25% of my blood in not getting oxygenated. I retrieved it next morning. It was beautiful being up there even for a short time. The cabin was in great shape; there was 3+ft of snow on the roof and at the ground level the snow was 3 to 4 ft deep. Again, the quiet and stillness of the mountains continues to awe me.
I will try to post some photos
