Steve, I've been trying to locate another work in paperback I read within the past couple years, without success. It was written by an British author very recently, and provides a Canadian/British perspective to the Fur Trade Era and the HUGE influence the Hudson's Bay Company had in Canada, the Oregon Country, and the territories that became States after the 49th Parallel was decided as the 2 nations' north boundary. I can't recall the book's title to save my life. I'll find it, though--and its text offers further affirmation of the Johnson/Johnston question we tripped over earlier as well as on Hugh Glass and a number of other people commented upon by DeVoto.
Most of all, thanks again Jay!
