Lot numbers can make a big difference - that's why the always advise down loading and working up with a new can - and that's why I like to buy in 8 or 10 pounds of the same lot of powder.
No not the same lot#, if its the lot# that would be a first for me. Unfortunately I have to pick up powder as I see it available. Powder around here is either scarce or highly over priced. I STILL don't have the luxury of buying in 8# cans yet because of the supply depletion. Can't wait for things to come back to normal!
At this point in time it's good to just get on a list of in internet provider like powder valley
You do know that you could have done the same with the Ruger Rings and Ruger Rear sight. :)
At least it works for me.

Lefty: PM me your Address and I'll send you one to try out and see if you like it. I just happen to have an inexpensive Leapers Red/Green Dot sight I'm not using and you can try it out and see if it is something of interest to you.
Then you can go buy which ever brand you like. They run from $29.95 to $700.00+
Your scope mount should repeat pretty close so you can remount it and go back to zero, and it won't cost you anything but the ammo you burn up playing with the dot sight.
Have to warn you,,, you will like it.
Luckily a Bushnell TRS-25 is only $90! It will add 3.2 oz. to your bare gun so it's almost like shooting it with irons.
I have 3 of them on guns and I absolutely love them. Fastest way to get on target there is and you will have no problem at all hitting a man sized target at 200+ yds !
Give me a holler, I'll fix you up.
Randy
I am going to try it on my Scout. If I like it I might just keep it on until it dies. For certain types of shooting they are definitely the best thing out there. This one weighs 7.4 oz.
I don't expect a Red Dot to be the hot setup for LR Sil. But for any kind of tactical shooting game it would work great.
I also have to give some props to Leapers. I have had this Red/Green dot sight for several years, I also have a 1-4x Leapers scope I ran on my Mini 14 for two FS classes or about 1000 rounds total. It never moved,,, and the Dot sight is still on the original battery many years later.
The Dot sight was $29.95 and the scope was $79.95 and I have gotten my moneys worth out of both of them many times over.
I think Leapers/UTG is one of the better names in Inexpensive Chinese optics and accessories.
Randy.
New Scout Rifle Owner and 2 Questions. I'm picking this rifle up Saturday, NIB from a private party at a great price. First off, do you think a modest application of Butch's Bore Paste would speed up the break in of the barrel? Second, has anyone tried Ranch Dog's 165 grain TLGC flat point boolit that he designed for the .30-30 in this rifle? I've cast up a bunch of water dropped WW and it looks like with the GC right at the base of the neck that two of the tumble lube grooves would be exposed, but that should present no real problem unless you carry the rounds loose in a dirty pocket. It might, however, be too fat for the short throat of the rifle. I guess I can load up a dummy round and see how it works. If it will chamber I will try some with 2400 and 5744 and report back.
I've just read the entire journey that all of you folks have taken since someone posted to see if anyone and even seen one yet back in 2011. This long thread really shows the great character of the shooters and riflemen found on this site. Thanks for sharing all that you've learned with just this one fine rifle. GF
Grey Fox - the real question is are you going to shoot Irons, normal scope or long eye relief scope.
Red Dot???
I took the rail off mine - didn't like it and I shoot with either a 2X7 Leo or the Iron sights that came with it.
I think that RD might be too fat with the base at the junction of the neck and shoulder.
Hope you enjoy yours as much as the rest of us do!
I highly suggest you VERY thoroughly clean the barrel befor ethe first shot is ever made. Not sure what they put in my barrel when I bought it, but I'll say it was NASTY!
Mgysgt: I'm going to sight it in with the issue irons first to see what it and I can do since I shoot aperture sights on most of my rifles. I'll have a new Nikon 2x7 to put on it in the standard position, but that will come after I evaluate the irons. I may even try one of the Bushnell red dots with the zooming dot since my primary use will be deer and hog hunting here in GA and possibly some combat rifle courses. I've got a fair number of the pulled 147 FMJBTs and if I can find the IMR 4895 I may just shoot them until I get it broken in. Lefty, I'll make sure to scrub the bore well, first with the foaming bore cleaner, then the Butch's Bore Paste. GF
[QUOTE=excess650;2339427] Mine both have throats shorter than .15" so that RD boolit won't fit unless the GC is below the neck.
How did you check the depth of the throat? I need to do this to mine.
I wish there was a better reciever sight made for Rugers WITHOUT drilling and tapping news holes. I have a NECG on my No.1 but its still opposing screws for windage adjustment.
Using the backwards flatbase jacket bullet method my chamber throat measures about .230" deep.
NECG now has 2 reciever sights for Rugers.

Call Ruger - They make a receiver sight for the No 1 and it just MIGHT work for the GSR. If you plan on or might want to take the rail off, while you have them on the phone ask them to send you a set of plugs for the screw holes left after you take it off. They sent me a set free of charge.

Well, I picked up the Gunsite rifle from the guy today and think I may have made the best deal I've done in a long time. A NIB rifle and a NIB Nikon Monarch 2-7 for less than I've seen the rifle alone here. The guy had taken it in a trade, but he is wedded to 6.5 Grendel as a caliber in several guns and saw no real need for this one. He mentioned he is building a CZ short action bolt gun in that caliber for his daughter--who just turned 3 years old! Now that a papa who thinks ahead for sure.
Anyhow, got to the powder stash and found that I have H4895, not IMR4895. I'm in the midst of processing 500 pieces of LC 74 brass and I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a load with 147 FMJ BTs with this powder and Rem 9 1/2 primers that will approximate Randy's load of 45.0 of IMR 4895 in this brass?
Meanwhile, I'm off to my shop to finish working on 250 pieces of brass that have been sized and deprimed and pockets swaged with my new Dillon Super Swager. Boy, was that one of the best buys I've made even though I had to wait 3 months for delivery. Now I've got run them through the Lyman motorized trimmer, chamfer and deburr, then deburr the flash holes and run them through the tumbler one more time to get the gunk off. I figure with neck sizing 500 pieces should last me quite a while with this rifle.
I've got the rifle bore soaking with Gunslick foaming bore cleaner, and once that is cleaned out I'll hit it with some Butch's Bore Paste to smooth the edges a bit. Then, load some ammo and head to the range maybe Tuesday. I hope this rifle shoots as nice as it looks. GF
Well now GF, congrats on a great rifle. I hope you enjoy yours atleast as much as I've enjoyed mine. I've never really had a bad day at the range with mine even when it didn't shoot the way I wanted it to.
That brass will last a long time. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've loaded and shot the same 50 pieces of Remington brass in development in my GSR.
My rifle like 46.0gr IMR 4064 and a 150gr jacket, 47.0gr of Varget and a 150gr jacket. Haven't tried IMR 4895 yet as I'm trying my best to get it to shoot cast. A friend of mine has had great success with IMR4895 and a 165gr jacket but I don't know his powder charge.
Have fun with her!
