Put a single piece of lead shot under the set screw. It will mash down and hold things very secure, while also saving the threads of the screw you are trying to set.

Ok, I've had a couple of drippy BP furnaces in the past and always kept 2 things on hand:
1 some narrow baking trays to put under the spout should she decide to drain completely, but even better than that is
2 stick (about 2"w x 8" long x 3/4" thick) with a 2" 4d nail driven through it near one end. The nail is just the right size to clear the spout or block it off should things get out of hand.
