Jailer: My idea is to use the higher power scope for the same thing. A 5x scope is fine for shooting a deer at 200 yds, but trying to hit a target in the same place without the magnification is a problem.''
I am going to FrontSight next week for a rifle class and I'm my taking my Mini 14 and my Scout.
I just resighted the Mini yesterday as I had removed the scope and had big problems indexing on the target at 100 yds with the 1.25-4X scope.
Now understand, shooting a man sized target at 25,50, and even 100 yds offhand, the scope is not the handi cap. I am,,, but I am working out all this week. It's all about "gun lifts" just like trapshooting.
But if you needed to shoot thru a hole in the wall at 100 yards it could be a problem.
I did hit a shotshell 3 times in a row at 200 yds (or at least it looked like I did) but that was off a rest and even then I could only see approximately where the shell was.
You just can't index the crosshairs close enough to really get a good accuracy indication, cuz you can't see the target well enough.
That's why I want the higher power scope.
XS: some of the XS aperatures are threaded for the Lyman aperatures. The thread is 7/32-40 normally expresssed as .218-40 NEF This thread is common to most outfits producing non metric metalic sights. I doubt those parts would fit the Ruger versions of those sights however as the Ruger versions have a smaller aperature part, it is not big enough to thread a .218 hole in. That piece loks about 5/16" at most. Might work but it would be tight.
By the way those Ruger sights are part Ruger castings, the main body of the sight,,, and part XS, the little slide and the aprerature. Ruger assembles them in house.
The rail does go over the top of the ejection port but it doesn't interfer any more than a scope does.
You're normally loading from the bottom anyway, however I was single loading mine the other day by just dropping a round on top of the mag and closing the bolt. It had no problem picking up the round and feeding it perfectly. The rail would not have affected this operation.
