Randy,
You sir are a kind gentleman. They say the camera adds weight to you, unfortunately, I really am that pudgy.
Hi Whit,
I don't know if the Scout struggled but I certainly did. The second photo you see is me on stage that required you to advance while firing on targets at 25 and 50 yards, engaging each with 5 rounds while moving to cover. It required working the bolt as fast as possible. That stage tested my skills with a bolt gun and I was pleased at how well the Ruger performed.
I did not write the stages to accommodate any given class of rifle, you choose your weapon and learn to use it as well as possible. I may shoot an AR, my AK, or even the Scout in the next match, I haven't decided yet but this is a way to test your abilities and the rifles capabilities and work out any bugs in either.
I have written the stages for this month and they will be some very close and fast woods run type shooting ( I have been calling these Zombie runs) and some mid range skills stages.
Randy, If you wish, I'll send you the stages from this month.
A few more pics from the match. I wish I had a few from the other three stages.
I bit the boolit yesterday and boght my 308. The Ruger GS Scout. Took some time last night to clean it and get it ready for the range today.
I mounted a Leo 2X7 Vari X2 on it in the conventional manner. I hate it that this scope doesn't have click adjustments - took me 10 rounds to get it zeroed.
Overcast and about 52 degress - zero wind effect.
Put up a new target at 100 and was going to check the zero at 100 before shooting for a group. 1st round at about 8 o'clock in the black. might as well go for a group.
2nd round 12 o'clock touching the black - Thought it was a little high when the trigger broke
3rd round 1 o'clock about 3/8's out of the black - called high and right. Knew I had to tighten up and hold right!
4th and 5th overlapped at 9 o'clock in the black.
The scope was set at 7 power and the cross hairs amost blocked out the black dot.
These were rounds 11-15 out of a new rifle! I just might have to put a higher magnification scope on this thing to see just what it really is capibale!
Bruce - don't push it to shoot anything more than a 22 - It hurts - I know - been there, done that got the scar. You will be back to shooting soon enough!
Yea I know PICTURES - well here is the target.
Gunny: Glad all that research finally pushed you into our camp. You'll be glad you got it, and if your first shots are any indication, shortly you'll be loving this gun as much as the rest of us do.
So that group is about 1.5"? from a new barrel? with factory ammo? I bet you can do better just by shooting it some more.
I can't see how anyone can still question the validity of these guns.
They are that good!
Randy
Kerry: yes, if you can email me the set up I'd appreciate it.
I am shooting IDPA this weekend and will be pushing for this new match.
Randy
Randy,
The ammo I was using is LC 93 Match ammo - so it is not your everyday off the shelf ammo. I really think that shots 1, 4 and 5 is really the capibility of the rifle and the ammo.
I am going to shoot it again this weekend with a different target type to see if I can get a better sight picture.
The bolt is rough as a cob on extraction, loading seems to be a bit better. Trigger breaks clean but is heavy, how heavy I don't know as I don't have a trigger scale.
I really like the rifle and I plan to put about 100 rounds through it before I start shooting cast through it.
Barrel cleaned real easy and quick, so it didn't copper foul too bad.
Drew
Gunny, the next time you need to sight the gun for any reason, such as new ammo or range, shoot it at smallest dot on target you can see at that new range. Hold the gun steady sighting, again at that same dot,(that can be a trick, obviously), and move the cross hairs to cover the center where the boolit actually hit. Sighting done. You don't need clicks; that's for BR guys who use clicks instead of KW. ... felix
Felix - That works to a point. The target I used has a 1 in dot. The crosshairs of the scope covers the entire dot. Hard to tell exactly where you are at. You could be 1/2 in high, low, left, right and not really be able to tell. On the one that is at 1 o'clock out of the dot I could tell the cross hairs were high and right when the shot broke - called high and right. The other one that just touches the dot I 'thought' I was a little high when the trigger broke but didn't call it before I looked through the spotter scope.
I was shooting from sand bags with my left hand under the butt stock for elevation - real comfortable shooting position. I use the same setup with my Sharps 45/90's.
I have 2 choices - put a higher magnification scope on or find a different target that I can see where the cross hairs are and tell if they are in the center of the dot. I have a bunch (2 boxes) of 25 yard slow fire targets with a better defined center dot - I may try them next time.
Drew
That's right, Drew. Better the eyeball, better the results. Don't forget about the ambients too, amongst the excitement of having a new gun! ... felix
Gunny: I think your groups will get better the more you shoot. I hadn't shot over a rest for a year before I did mine and it yeilded 7/8" for 5 shots. It's both breaking the gun in and breaking you in. BUt if those three shots are the best it will do I wouldn't complain a whole lot. Looks like 3/4" to me
You will find that if you buy some polymer mags from Ruger the bolt will cycle much smoother. The polymer mags have much more lubricity at the feed lips than the metal ones do and as a result they strip rounds off much smoother and with much less effort. I use the 5 round ones almost exclusively. Won't use the 10 round mags unless I do a Tactical Match with the gun. I have shot mostly Long Range Silhoutte with mine.
I was told by the engineer from Ruger that they are discontinuing all the metal mags and as soon as they are gone the guns will ship with polymer mags.
My gun is a very early one and I had to do some things to smooth it out, and it is OK now. Not great but OK. My roommate just bought one a month ago and it is a very late gun with a 20K + serial number and it is slick!
The barrels break in quickly, they are hammer forged. Mine has about 600 rnds of jacketed thru it now and it cleans completely with one papertowel patch, never any fouling. It took 2-300 rnds to be nice.
I am using Recycled M80 ball bullets (147gr FMJBT's) and 45 gr of IMR4895 for my load.
The more you shoot this gun the better you will like it. They grow on you.
Randy
It took 1000 rounds or so of high antimony / low tin boolits to fix the Ruger lever 44mag gun I have. So many folks have given up on that particular gun because of its in-accurate-ness up front. Ruger likes to use 4140 steel barrels, and that's too hard for most of us shooting the way we do. ... felix
Randy,
The only loaded ammo I have is LC 93 Match M852. I am going to put 100 rounds of it through it before I go through my bullet cabinet and find all my 30 cal J bullets. I will work up loads with them and shoot most of them up. By the time I get done the barrel should have the blueing off and be as smooth as it is going to get with out firelapping it (WHICH I AM NOT GOING TO DO).
I will start loading Cast for it in a few months, once I get a good supply of cast laid in. have to do a chamber cast and slug the bore - but I am going to wait on that until it gets smoothed out from the J-Bullets.
This weekend is suppose to be good weather, as long as I don't have to work - it should be a good weekend to shoot!
Drew
Well another round of Long Range Silhoutte went in the books today. Only got 8 out of 40 this time but I haven't shot in several months either.
Definately need to shoot the pellet gun more often as it keeps my muscles in some kind of shape. Just laying off for a few weeks and I'm back to square one.
Once again the rifle functioned flawlessly, and with the exception of a few real flyers, all misses were within 1 foot of the targets.
This gun is turning out to be one of,,, if not the best gun I have ever bought.
Randy
Thanks for the update. I've enjoyed following this thread.
Hey Randy,
Did you manage to get enough interest in a tactical rifle match? Our next match wil be April 22 and I,ve added some twists for the guys this time. As to the Ruger GSR, I fully agree and will say that this is the best rifle I have ever owned. Mine has over 1000 rounds though it so far and I will finish processing another couple of hundred boolits to load this afternoon when we return from a family get together for Easter. Happy Easter everyone.
Question - What cast boolit are folks using in the 308W? I have a 31141 HP and the NOE clone of RD's 311165.
The 31141 is in a SC - too slow to use as a practice boolit, and the NOE 311-165 the shank goes past the case neck and the GC and lube is in the powder. With Dacron filler that may not be an issue.
I need to shoot the Ruger more but I am working on a Savage 340 with the NOE right now. Trying to get a good soft load my oldest grand daughter can shoot from it. She is recoil sensitive and if the kick is too hard for her - she won't shoot. She wants to shoot just doesn't like the recoil of even factory 30/30's.

Go to the "CB loads/Military Rifles" forum and see my thread on the M1A rifle It's not a bolt-action, but I used a fair number of designs which functioned well IN A SEMI-AUTO.
Many of those same loads will see trials in my own Gunsite Scout, if I can just get going on the project (medical difficulties). The M1A thread should give some indicators, anyway.
Thanks Bruce!
Drew
Try the NOE version of 311299. This is my .30-06/.308 boolit of choice. It will even work well in your .30-30 Savage.
There was lots of interest from the Match Director. There are logistical problems however and it may not happen at that range just for those reasons. A bunch of hoops to jump thru.
I am toying with the idea of setting up something at my Range in Ojai as it would be better suited to the task. the issue here would be getting it by the board, and finding a weekend that wasn't using that part of the range.
Everybody is interested we just have to pull it together. I'm sure you understand the challenges.
