My daddy did that , I had forgotten all about him burying the fish parts after we cleaned them.
I need to add some to my row, been thinking about tomatoes lately and getting the urge for a good BLT !

Black oil sunflower seeds on and in the snow pile under the bird feeders with a fresh 2" cover again this morning.
As a kid we used to catch carp in fall and bury them where the tomatoes would be the next season. First year we did it we had double the amount of tomatoes.
Well, I don't have anything planted yet, but, I have hopes of a bigger garden this year, about 6 acres.
Along with the regular garden vegetables, I'm planning on lots of onions and strawberries.
My onions have done very well the last several years and this year I have already ordered 120 bundles of assorted onions (50-75 sets per bundle) and 1000 strawberry plants.
To make harvesting easier I'm going to try a u-pick at my place.
The onions, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and melons will be planted in plastic with drip line to water and feed my plants.
Good hobby that helps finance my shooting hobby.

How many people do you have working for you? Planting onions on plastic is a lot of work. I plant 60 bunches on bare ground. I spray with Goal immediately after planting, and over the top with Dual Magnum 6 weeks later. There is not a single weed in the row. when I harvest. I plant in wide rows 5 across. It takes me about 12 hours to plant 60 bunches. The backs of my legs are so sore after 12 hours bent over planting that I have trouble walking for 2 days.

Today we hauled some sheep manure to our new homesite (we are building a cabin in the woods). We are putting up coldframes that will eventually be raised beds. Going to plant some mesclun mix in our first bed tomorrow. Exciting!
Love mesculen mix in my salad, I pick some butter head then some of that and fill a bowl!
I have two of my nephews boys working for me, one is doing it for money, the other is doing it for half wages and I take him out west to shoot prairie dogs.
I also have a couple of implements that will make a raised bed and lay plastic mulch.

Our Louisiana fruit and Vegetable association has a plastic mulch layer that any of the members can use. I tried the plastic mulch one year, but prefer bare ground and herbicides.
I make raised beds with a sugar cane hipper and then run a troy Built tiller over the top.
The soil is so loose that I can plant a 300 foot row of tomatoes in 30 min by myself.
I had help for 4 years from a high school kid, but other than that by noon on the first day they would either quit, or I would fire them. When an 18 year old kid can't outwork a 65 (at that time) year old man: I don't need them.
My wife will pick the cherry tomatoes and the Zinnias, and sell the vegetables at the house. I do everything else. We use to have 4 acres of peaches, but oak root rot killed all of them.
I know that you are busy with 6 acres and only 2 helpers.
Good luck with the season.
two flats of peppers, one flat of leeks and 12 tomato seeds in 12 pots in the south big window.
we got about 500 peppers started and doing well and just did about 500 tomatoes that are almost ready to pop out of the starter trays. have a neighbor that does commercial onions (about 2000 acres ) lets us pull a pickup under his harvester and we have found its cheaper and easier than growing our own, same deal with potatoes.
160 tomatoes in the ground Feb 15, covered with agribon AG-30 spun polypropylene. It will protect the tomatoes down to 27. I get tomatoes 3 weeks earlier than people that wait to set them out. I am waiting for the ground to dry to plant the second row. The greenhouse is full of tomatoes peppers and eggplants. Peppers and eggplant go in the ground in one to two weeks.
Dang, And I thought central MS was early :)
Since I moved up here to NW Arkansas I haven't had the place to garden much until we moved last year. Bought a small tractor, tiller and belly mower and endloader for it. Tried tilling up a small plot last year and DANG do I have ROCK! Being from MS, there was only the stray piece of gravel in the ground. Where I'm at is almost no dirt, but rock. No wonder no one worries about pulling off a driveway into a field when it is wet up here! I picked out 6 endloader full loads of rock out of my little plot. (30x50ft max) and I haven't really touched it yet. I'm betting another 10 more loads to get most of the stuff that is good throwing rock size out. I guess this is why most folks use raised beds in the area...... Ground is pretty rich otherwise. I'll try planting some potatoes in another week or so, and will add some other stuff as it warms up
use the rocks to make walls for the raised beds. they last forever.
Nothing just yet , but I'm starting to think about fresh home grown tomatoes and BLT's with them.
Will have to plant a Roma , I can these , and like the flavor of Celebrity .
Last year I planted some called Homestead, an heirloom tomato, it did OK but was nothing to write home about .
I love going down to the Garden Center and finding new varieties to try.
One year I planted one called Brandywine , it did well and had good taste. I liked them. The next year I planted another , just a little too early , we had a cold spell and I lost it. I'm going to look for some more of those and try again. Daddy always said "to wait until Good Friday to plant Tomatoes".
If I find some I'll wait and do what the old man said....he was usually right.

Still 2 weeks from when I will even start anything indoors... need to get with my neighbor later this week and plot out how much bigger we are making the garden and who is starting what. I will be doing the San Marzano tomatoes for sure, maybe the heirloom beefsteak for slicers for BLT's... Looking forward to fresh lettuce in my salads!
I decided to try the "straw bale tomatoes" this year. We had a pair of straw bales left over from Halloween that we managed to change the decorations on through Thanksgiving and then Christmas. Rather than throw them out, I moved them to the back and watered them down every day. I have 4 hybrid heirloom breeds growing. They are already producing fruit.
I started working the soil last week ...I guess it's a bit early, we got snow last night, about 4...buried my Grader.
