There's a rule of thumb for that:
You're car is junk, and the car you're wanting to buy is the best one in the industry.
Used car prices are still up right now!
I was working for a dealership in the used car department.
What do you have?
I think the OP was requesting PMs if you have experience and suggestions.....
I would sell on open market for 25 to 50% more than any dealer will give you.

If it runs and has 4 aired up tires; it will bring $1000 minimum in Texas. If the AC works; $2000!

and they keep calling me to buy my truck
dealers are thieves sell it yourself.
I hate to sell high dollar items myself so it is worth it to me to trade in to a dealer. Just know what yours is valued at before you go in. KBB shows a bit low these days so figure at or higher than the top end of their scale.
Exactly, That's why I sell my car before hand and then use the funds in the next purchase. Oh yeah, they are going give you some big number to trade in....then gauge the primary cost of your lust somehow to get it back....Its all Voodoo with these guys unless your trading in a 2 year old car to get a new.
KBB will give you wholesale value, and private party value, and retail.
It takes about 10 mins on their website and I've found KBB to be pretty accurate to real world.
There is always exceptions, because some vehicles are more in demand in some regions, than others.
Anyway, with those three numbers, you will have all the info necessary to continue with whatever you are gonna do.
I've been watching prices on Toyota FJ Cruisers, and dang, they sure go for a lot more than I'd expect...I guess everyone in Minnesota wants one?
On my last two vehicles bought from dealers I financed the minimum that could be financed through the company finance depts (Nissan and Toyota) then payed it off in the minimum time possible (usually three months). The discount for financing was a lot more than the little interest I paid for three months. This works a lot better if you have a good credit rating and can get minimum interest rate.
I get offers for my 2018 F150 in excess of $25K from dealers, it’s in very good condition with low miles and it’s paid for. Not interested in selling to buy a woke vehicle.
KBB and NADA for used car values. Usually there is wholesale, trade-in and retail. Dealers will try and buy for wholesale. Print all of it off and take it with you when you go deal. You might check into your states tax situation because here, when you trade in a vehicle you only pay sales tax on the difference. If you sell your car then pay the cash on the new car, you pay the full sales tax on the new vehicle. Its like saving almost 9% of your used car value here, if you live in town.
My last vehicle transaction, the dealer had a trade-in valuation tool on their website. I used it and printed out the results. I was happy with their value. When I went to trade-in, I handed them the print-out of the trade value from their site, and they refused to honor it. All car dealers are liars and thieves.
