I went to the store to check out an antique Colt but left with this Mowrey "target" rifle. It's .40 caliber.
Reviews online are mixed - some love them, some hate them.
It looks like it'll be a fun rifle to plink with.

Looks like there is nice wood under the leather pad. Have fun shooting it!
I had a .45 and thought it was a great rifle. Handles well if you have a longish neck like me and prefer more drop in the stock. I sold it to a good friend with the agreement he would sell it back if he got tired of it - then he died suddenly. His brother scooped up all the guns and the Mowrey went along.
They have very simple actions but are quite robust and most have adjustable triggers.
I still have my Mowrey .50 that I got about 1978.
I sold the .45 caliber one that I built years ago.
It is one of the most fun BP rifles that I have ever shot.
In fact.
I shot 5 out of 35 clay pigeons with it.
Those were thrown with a hand launcher and shot with a .50 lead ball , not bird shot.
The drop in that rifle stock fits me so well and is easy to shoot.
I call my rifle "Thunder"
It has the Curly Maple stock and forend.
That rifle was bought already built.
The .45 caliber one I built from one of their kits.
I went to check out a Colt 1849 .31, something that I've been looking for (at a good price) for a long time. The gun was all original, but it had been reblued at some point. Then I saw the Mowrey for alot less money. Usually I research the heck out of a gun before I buy it, but the Mowrey was a shiny pretty thing just sitting there. I like the idea of a .40 caliber. Should be fun.
That is a nice looking rifle. I hope it shoots as good as it looks.
Buy yourself a jar of Brasso brass polish.
Keeping it really shiney makes it look so good.
I don't know what the Mowreys are going for now.
But I bought mine back in '78 for $245.
A friend of a friend had one two years ago that was a Walnut Stock Steel frame model with fancy Target sights that he was asking $1100 for it.
This one was a little over $400. It's a heavy rifle. Looks like it was taken care of (or not shot much).
I agree that those models seem to be a little Barrel Front Heavy.
But I love to shoot it without resting it on anything.
I did think about buying another Mowrey and shortening the barrel to lighten it up since that model stock fits my shoulder and eyes so well.
