Winchester .351SL Model 1907......need advice

...Idea ....use .357 Mag chamber reamer to enlarge the original .351 barrel chamber Rim diameter from .410 to .440 (same depth)...
this will allow use of Starline 360 Dan Wesson brass for re-loading ammo as is except to trim length from 1.410 to 1.380"....... plus still being able to use the original .351 brass if any becomes available .....currently using rimless modified .223 / 5.56mm cases ...which do work ...but the 360DW Mag case would work better I think

any Model 07 Guru out there ?

I believe that I have enough for my lifetime now.

But.... making it from 357 Maximum was simple enough. Just a matter of turning down the rim (and I did turn an extraction groove into mine also - though apparently that's not necessary).

I use .357 Mag brass (not Max). Rim turned down in drill press with file to approx. .408" (rim diameter from .404" to .411" works). No extractor groove. .352" cast bullet. 38/357 dies (I use a 9mm crimp die for neck tension). 17 grs IMR 4227.
Velocity approx. 1600 fps
I have a few vintage rounds that average a little faster - 1879 fps

It's pretty important to replace the buffers and recoil spring.

I have a custom mold to cast 180grain Flat nose ..plus Hornady 165 grain FTX and Winchester 170/ 180 /200 soft nose Jacketed ...which are resized from .355 to .351 after pushing through a .353 .352 and .351 die I made on an arbor press .....these projectiles are for the Winchester 350 Legend .....
5.56mm brass swaged with a .351 ID sizer I made to fit the Redding die(replaces the Redding .349 case ID punch which I found is way to tight a grip on the cast bullets) on the Lee single stage press .....goes down in the case 1/4" to 1/2" .......push the projectile in(fits real snug) with finger force.....optional light crimp ...
17 grains Accurate #9,Lil'Gun,H110,Win296,Imr 4227,Alliant 2400,Accurate 4100 .....FPS unknown

Is it good brass?

I bought some Jamison stuff when I first got a 1907. Those rifles sure are hard on brass.

I want to try .357 Magnum brass. Sure would make brass a lot easier to source and I can't see how it could be any worse than shooting .38 Specials in a .357 chamber.

I tried the 357 MAX brass but the case mouths were getting beat up. The shorter 357 MAG brass works perfectly - in my gun, at least - even without the extractor groove. The bullet compresses the IMR 4227 which is OK with that powder. Before I load the case, I crimp the neck slightly with a 9mm crimp die (down the neck approx the length of the bullet), then expand it slightly to take the bullet.
Trimming the rim isn't hard. Somehow, it all works. I had another .351 and it worked perfectly on that gun, too.
I use the same technique (and bullet) on the .35 WSL, using .38 SP brass (and less powder).

Fired .357 Mag brass....run through Redding .351 OD sizing dies .....swage case ID to .351 .....get a Lee .351/.352 bullet sizer bushing ...Lightning Ammo LA-2013 cast 38 caliber,.357 160 Gr Round Nose ....projectile can be pushed in by hand to LOA 1.800-1.750.....very light crimp so it does not move with finger pressure ......15 gr Accurate
#9....no powder compression ......I did not use the magazine and fire it to see if they would feed in but they do by hand ...I was "single shooting" them with Mag out.....there are 5 357 cases in the mix with the 5.56mm cases with 160gr Lightning lead ....single round photos are 357 with cast 180gr flat nose....loa 1.750"...can be longer 1.8" using second lube groove in bullet.....turn case rim to .410 / .407...no extractor mod needed....clip photo is with 5 357 cases/160 gr .410 rims
