Kake Cutter Photos
Bob in TX wanted a Kake Cutter for .358 " sized cast bullets using the pan lubing process .I made him one and will be shipping it to him today.
Thought you might like to see it . It is made out of a fired 35 Ack, 40 degree, improved, Whelen cartridge case. Fits the .358 " cast bullet " SNUG ".
It has a piece of 80 grit sand paper glued to the outside of the case to prevent your hand from slipping while using the tool and to aid in being able to remove the bullet from the solidified lube. The cutter has an ejector pin also for easy removal of the bullets when they are cut out of the solidified lube.
If a person plans on not buying a lube sizer, they would need a Lee Sizing die , here it is :

Then , get yourself some lube, & you're " In Business ! ! " with respect to sizing and lubing your own cast bullets.
If you'd like to read more about pan lubing , take a look at the next link :

I vote you get an "automatic sticky" with KUDO from the management.

Just another effort to get a young caster ( or even an older one for that matter ) , sizing and lubing quickly without a lot of out of the pocket cash expenditure.
Let's face it, a lot of young casters just can't come up with $125 - $175 or more for a nice lube / sizer.
This system will make lubed and sized bullets that will rival ( or could exceed ) the accuracy potential of the ones done by the " lube sizer boys."
There will be absolutely no top punch / sizer die mis - alignment with the pan lubing system, so the pan lubed and nose sized bullets could possibly out shoot the ones done with a lube / sizer.

thanks Ben I'm looking forward to using both Kake cutters;-):-)

Bob:
I hope you'll enjoy them and get many years of service out of them.

Ben,
After seeing your other Kake Cutter, I built one for my 30-06 boolets.
I first one I made I cut off the head-stamp and did a push through type.
What a mess that made for me! Gooey fingers, messy boolits. [smilie=b:
Then I cleaned that mess up and refined it with a toilet bolt and a spring from the springs jar.
MUCH better! The boolit gets cut from the kake, and popped back out without touching it.
Then I made one from a piece of tubing from a curtain rod scrap that fit a 45 ACP boolit to a T.
I'm going to use your idea of the sticky backed sandpaper on mine as well, great idea for traction!
(I have some rolls I use for my saw miter fences for traction when mitering wood pieces)

Good description Ben. I made a 358 similar to that except without the sandpaper, I have to try that trick. Made another one out of a 35 whelen case but cut the head of the case off and stuck it in a large rubber washer with a hole drilled out. the boolits get cut out of the cake and keep pushing each other out the top of that one- similar action to the Lee sizer. Use it for 357 boolit. Joe

Nothing wrong with 1 bullet pushing others out the top of your Kake Cutter.
The ejector pin ( for me ) seems a little less messy. May just be me ?
-
+ for me too, Ben.
When they pushed out the top I got boolit loob on my fingers and hands.
As soon as I made an ejector (fashioned after yours) I was in control of the mess.
All thanks to you and your great ideas.
I changed my 45 kutter tonight.
And will likely modify the 30 cal tomorrow.
-
Yeah the cutter that pushes boolits out the top is a little more messy, I don't use it as much.
-
Been usiing one like that for over 20 years and never thought they wern't common. On the rimmed cases I add a wood handle to the case and solder on finger grips for the rimless.

Thanks for showing that expensive tools are not needed to produce very good bullets.
-
Expensive tools are really not needed to size and lube cast bullets, btroj.
If you're the least bit mechanically inclined this one is very easy to make.

They certainly are not. I am just happy to see someone pointing that out to the new guys.

Thanks for the idea!:redneck:
I always said - Just ask here
and someone will have an answer for you.

Ben,
excellent tutorial !
How come no one is offering these in the swappin' and sellin' forum ?

I've made several, FWIW fired 8MM Mauser brass works great for .32 pistol slugs.
For the plunger stopper on top of the spring, I've used once fired range brass epoxied on. .32 auto for the .32, .45 ACP for .45 ect...

So does this mean your selling these things :)?? I'm really wanting to get into making and loading my own ammo, and this little beauty looks like a massive money saver for a little more time spent in a garage. looking into making/loading .357 for my S&W 686

Sometimes, simplicity trumps complexity. Ben has demonstrated that here. For the young, new casters, I believe that is the way to go. I have made kake cutters similar (but not as pretty or well designed) as his and pan lubed for my boolits. It works. Nothing wrong with it. Pan lubing and the Lee sizing dies work excellent, in my world. I have Star sizer/lubricators, but still use pan lubing and Lees for certain applications.
