One wonders if they took down a bear with their air rifle. An account of THAT would make for good reading!
As I recall the air rifle was attached to the boat. But that is only from memory.
Stephen Ambrose wrote a book “Undaunted Courage” detailing their trek. It’s a very good read, along with several of his other history based books.
The air rifle was fired from the shoulder, just like the flintlock rifles. Every time the expedition stopped to visit a settlement they would demonstrate the air rifle.
