9MM headstamp question
I found a few odd 9MM cases in a batch of range pickups which I think I know what it is but would like to verify it if I can. At 12:00 it is stamped 23WIN and at 6:00 it is stamped 9MM Luger.
This ammunition, as far as I can tell came from a white box of WIN 115 gr. FMJ loads. I am assuming the 23 stands for the year of manufacture and the WIN indicates Winchester. Would my assumptions be correct? If not, what is the significance of the 23WIN headstamp.

Hi OP,yes the # is the manf. year. The oldest i've come across is 1962.(45acp)

Large contract orders can probably stipulate a special headstamp with the information they want. I believe 23 would be the year. I've come across Federal (FC) .223 or 5.56 that had a different headstamp that included the year but it was not a typical military headstamp.

With all the stuff we're shipping overseas, no telling what headstamps you'll fine. I'm guessing you guys are correct on the 23 being the year on manufacture. Maybe Win indicated Winchester for some military contract for offshore./beagle

iirc the Winchester white box ammo has only been sold in past 30 years - definitely not 1923 -
