ID a sporterized mauser?

A mauser followed me home from the pawn shop a couple weeks ago.

She's been neglected but not abused. Seems like she was a deer rifle that laid around after he couldn't use her anymore. I imagine it was a "settling the parent's estate" thing. The scope is right on top of where the best info would be. And I don't want to remove that if I don't have to. The receiver and barrel match.

You can tell it was T bloc, the "Gew 9x" is very faded and I can't tell if it's 98 or 93. I just bought a 8mm no go gauge to see if she's unsafe headspace wise. Should I be concerned that this isn't a standard 98, 8mm mauser?

If it's marked GEW 9X it would be a GEW 98. The Model 93 and 95s were marked Modelo 93 or 95. As a GEW it would probably have been a WWI German issue 8mm.

You have a large ring Mauser (model 1898). Model 93's were small rings. As 36g said above, if it says GEW 98 on the side it is most likely a sporting rifle built on a German WW1 action.

I would double check the bore size.
Make sure it is a .323 bore not a .318.
I have come across several Sporters that by chance had a .318 barrel from rifles before WW1 or possibly were the only caliber that citizens were allowed to possess.

The Gew98 is a great action. I'd love to see the rest of the rifle.
Just my opinion- those mounts have to go!

Those mounts make the scope into a carry handle. The height makes it impossible for most people to achieve a cheek weld and see the crosshairs at the same time.

It is the same as one that I built recently a 1916 vintage GEW98. I installed a Pecar scope and a 30.06 chambered barrel.

That's a large ring Mauser alright cant tell the model from the picture though. A good test to see what it is chambered in is see what will fit. most likely it is in the standard 8x57, gunsmith can also do a chamber cast if need be. Some 8x57s were rechambered to 8mm-06 or re bored to 9.3x57 or 9.3x62. How well will an 8mm bullet fit in the muzzle? many 7x57s were also build on 98 actions and are quite popular amongst hunters.
