35 30/30 questions

Hello all,
I am in need of some expert opinions! I purchased this '94 a while back thinking it should be a hoot to shoot and reload for. I purchased the rifle with "appropriate " brass. The pictures I included are of a 35 30/30 (made with a set of rcbs dies) and a case from a 30/30 shot through the rifle. Any chance someone can identify this variant?

I agree, I have fire formed 30-30 into 38-55 and they come out as a straight walled case but short per 38-55 specs. The short case still shoot well for freebie range brass.

No, that's not a 38-55. The 38-55 is a straight-walled case, there appears to be a small shoulder on the sample case. I'm not sure which 35/30-30 variant that is but send a sample to Huntington Die Specialties and they'll make a set up for you. Frankly, if I were shooting a 35/30-30, I'd want one just like that! Nice long neck!!

My .35/.30-30 has a slight shoulder and long neck, as your case shown on the right does. The case shown on the left has a shorter neck more like a .35 Maine Guide, which has a .35 Remington front end on a shortened .30-40 Krag case.

I agree with your 38-55 mention, but it does in fact have a shoulder.

These are fire formed case measurements. I think I had better slug the barrel before I get too much farther into this "cheap" investment.

Do a chamber cast too. I've done it with candle wax and it worked very well.

The one on the left has too short a neck to be a classic 35-30/30 as in a 30/30 simply necked up to 35 cal. It appears to have a sharper shoulder? Assume that they are both head stamped 30-30? The one on the left looks like an AI version with some of the taper taken out and a shorter neck to give more powder capacity, though not enough to merit the change.

Take a 30-30 case, load it with @ 12 grains shotgun powder, top it up with cornmeal, and cap it with a wax "slug". Fire it, and that's your case.

Let me get this correct, you shot a loaded case like the one on the left, and ended up with the one on the right?
Then I'd have to agree with Outpost75, looks like your chamber must be 35 30-30, and your dies are something else.

If his neck diameter is really .365 on the ID and .390 on the OD, he may have a 9.3x51R wildcat based on a .30-30 case.
He had better slug his barrel and see what its dimensions are....

This is an odd one, agree to have bore slugged.
But being a Wildcat, I guess what ever it ended up as it is.
This is from COTW 8th edition (1997).

Yes, both cases are headstamped 30-30. I fired a 170gr 30wcf through the rifle to get the one on the right (long neck, little shoulder). The one on the left came with the rifle - but that's my hang up. There is no way on God's Green Earth that this brass has ever seen the inside of this rifle.
I apologize, I haven't had a chance to slug it yet.
I also have a copy of the COTW that was posted and agree that this isn't exactly fitting that photo either.
I will slug tomorrow and let you all know!

A chamber cast is imperative.
I think you’re going to find Rifle has been rebored to .38/55. The factory .30/30 will shrink after initial firing, appearing to be a 9.3.
Slugging the bore with a 3/8” lead ball will confirm actual bore diameter.

Interesting looking rifle. Barrel appears to have been parked, and reciever cerra-coated.

I have a 35-30 Maynard 1882, 1.63 long, made from 30-30, shape is similar to 32-40, actually a double taper
the 35-40 Maynard 1882 is what looks like a straight tapered case 2.1 long
