Yes, its tough to get the end point you intend without setting up to achieve it. I think its about changing from experience... I want to burn my off-gas to reduce stink and save energy, I want to observe the gas coming off and I want to be...

I am hearing tales of people buying bulk 12G and taking the powder for target pistol loads. Doesn't help the primer shortage though.

Finally completed polishing and graphite of my new batch. The grains are very clean, and the powder flows beautifully. Interestingly, it appears the bulk density is slightly lower at 2F 87.5gn loose and 100gn settled. 3F 86gn loose and...

Hamgunner, the casting furnaces are a great plan for control. I am thinking I ought to build a furnace rig next, with almar's ideas for PID and everything, to cook charcoal, melt lead, and maybe burn out wax models for casting. Probably a bit...

Indeed! I recall crushing quartz in a quarry, we allowed 50%.

In my adjustable measure set to 100gn, I have been getting 88 grains trickled in loose and 102gn after taptaptap until it stops settling. 4hrs rounding did not change it. Graphite did not change it. Mixing in some of the next size down did not...

I have excellent results from the grain mill today! As the users suggested, I made thinner pucks this time. About 2/3 were thinner, less than 5mm, 1/3 more than 5.5. I took the obviously thick ones and used my puck breaker and sidecutters...

I haven't done proper brown charcoal, and I only have rudimentary control on temp so far using salvaged 300C thermometers from old grills. I stopped my batches when the smoke stopped because I wasn't watching closely and missed late changes. Haven't...

OK I found the calculation error; a bunch of aluminum dividers between pucks were not included in the weight calculations. The correct density is 1.85 after complete drying, but I estimate 2.1% moisture remains after 48 hours in the dehydrator.

I just checked the downforce on my jack handle and converted it to psi. Ooops. 35kg downforce on the handle is over 9 tonnes on the jack - and that is 6900psi. Oops! I was aiming for 3500psi when I started. Update! Just entered the weights and...

Get well soon Vettepilot. I have a few small symptoms myself, but can still taste and enjoy food. I hope you get back to yourself ASAP!

I got 35% fines average, including the 4F; 20% if you keep 4F (40#-100#) as good powder. I need much more 2F for longer range charges and shoot 3F in shorter range and pistol matches, so now everything from 40# down is reprocessed. I just...

Firstly, most of my work has been with the ceramic burr coffee grinder. LAGS and HamGunner's suggestions are good, set it wide and accept several passes, screening off the too-coarse material and regrinding only that. I add to what they said,...

That seems right, Vettepilot. However the strap I am trying suits the widest setting. If I hunt around I should be able to come up with a thinner one or two. but first: another batch of meal to puck!

I broke the handle on my cheaply made ceramic coffee mill. Now I have to invest in fixing it - or just make the malting mill work instead. Making bad tools is clearly where the work has gone, making powder is becoming easier apart from that. Edit...
