I just saw a video on moistre levels when mixing concrete and It got me thinking about pressing pucks. The tests that were done on the concrete that was mixed so dry it would barely form, was nearly 50% stronger than the concrete that was mixed wet....

I also posted some results about pressing pucks dry. I'm in Florida and we have humidity. If it gets below 70%, it's a good day. Below 50% is almost unheard of and only happens if we have a cold front pass in the middle of the afternoon. In the...

Doublebuck - I was the one who posted about crushing pucks with PVC. I just use a 2" cap and a 1 1/2" cap. I don't have them mounted in pipes or anything. I put my pucks in the 2" cap, put the 1 1/2" cap on top, then crunch them in the press. I just...

Vettepilot - My die set is very similar to your picture. Of course I don't have the set screws, but I also don't have the step on the bottom puck, either. For me, it works better without the step. When it's done pressing, I'll put the whole thing on...

I have a short puck that goes in the bottom of my sleve. I put the puck in the bottom of the sleeve, fill it with powder, put the main piston in top of that, then press it. Powder can't get out that way.

The alcohol/red gum thing got me thinking... there would be no way to control this and it would go away over time, but... what if you had a little alcohol residue in your black powder when loading cartridges? Could it provide some hydrocarbon for a...

Well... I did some experiments. Here are the results.. 1) The fun one - I loaded some .45acp with black powder and shot them from my full-size 45 (G21) and my subcompact 45 (G36). They worked and seemed to have decent kick, but they didn't cycle...

Indian Joe - Vette Pilot is right in a sense and you are right in a sense. If someone is looking to make their first batch, any materials you can get your hands on will make something that goes "bang" and will "set the hook." I have seen posts here...

Doublebuck - true words. As far as a binder slowing burn rate... if you were to use only 1% ot so, I'm not imagining that it would make a huge difference. I gave some 38 sp and 357 mag rounds to a friend (I only have a 38). He said he loaded 38...

As far as dwell time... I've noticed that it seems when my pucks are done, they are done. I'll put the initial squeeze on them and the pressure will back off within a couple of minutes. Then it will back off again one or two times over the next...

Speaking of speculation.. I've been speculating that binder might be beneficial after all... if just a little water does something to "activate" the ingredients and make them bind better, maybe just a touch of bider could also make the batch bind...

I was in Harbor Freight today and I looked at the 12 ton press to see if they had changed the design at all. Yes they did. My top member is two pieces that sendwich the side members a lot like the moveable base. The new design has that as one piece....

On another note, I re-pressed that dry powder after wetting it and letting it sit out. It did just like I'm used to.

I've used vacuum to dry things in a mason jar. At room temp, almost nothing happened. When I hit it with a hair dryer (from outside the jar) it boiled rapidly as soon as the temp rose only a couple degrees. But it took a lot of effort for just a...

That's a nice group. And there's nothing wrong with safety, but this is not the most dangerous thing I do by any means. I've tried to light part of a puck before. I set it on a paper towel and lit the paper towel. After the fire went out, and I...

I did an experiment today trying to press some dried powder. All I can say is that you all must live in the desert! I dried the powder on the dashboard of a car. It was completely dry. I tried to make a couple of pucks amd they were brittle and...
