My Cherokee seems to have a pretty fast twist and won't group very well with more than 15 grains of powder anyhow. I think they made them that way so they would shoot maxi balls as well. My Dixie longrifle needs 35 grains to work right, much slower...

My shooting partner is very experienced at Palma, and after we started with BPCR he decided the wind had about four times the effect on our bullets. Without his help I doubt I could shoot the scores I'm used to in silhouette, that big spotting scope...

I also recommend a 45 or 50 caliber caplock with a roundball twist. Something simple but effective, shot with real black powder. At this stage of the game guns are a lot easier to find than caps or powder. You might want to start accumulating those...

Depends on what your rifle is tapped for. Those sizes are close but not interchangeable. I'd check track of the wolf, they usually have a good stock of nipples.

As far as I know they are the only US source for platinum lined nipples since Cunyard died. You may find one in the UK, but probably you'll be using Ampco bronze for a while until platinum comes available again.

I sort of remember being 25, that is when I moved to NM. That's been a while! I had been casting bullets for 16 years by then.

In my experience here, around 17 grains of 4227 will probably get the job done.

Since I took up paper patching I have not had to buy a gas check. That's been about 10 years now and I haven't missed them yet.

Yes, 38 Colt is what you want with it's heeled bullet and straight through bored cylinder.

Seneca and Cherokee have a 13/16" barrel. Hawken is 15/16" and Renegade is 1". Lengths varied depending on just what variation you got.

4064 without a doubt. I had also worked up a load with H414 that shot very well, but on a prairie dog hunt I suddenly started missing shots. I gave the barrel a good cleaning and the accuracy returned. Never had to do that with 4064.

Have you measured the length of your rifle's chamber or just going off what it is supposed to be? They may not be the same thing. Short brass will sometimes let the bullet bump up while still in the neck area of the chamber and then shave a ring off.

Just like any new rifle, it always pays to go through it and find those little things the factory didn't get right. Glad to hear it was an easy fix and you're off and running now. And yeah Enfields are nice but Springfields are so much more...

Nice shooting! So you are sizing the bullet to eliminate the bigger rear section and make it the same all the way down? It seems to work well.

Cool! Thanks for all the reply's. Gives me a few routes to investigate. My very accurate shortened 223 Encore barrel shoots my Lee 55 grain PC'd and sized .225 very well. I load them with lite loads of Trail Boss and velocity is between 22LR and...

Looks like you got your answer already. If you haven't worked on them before they can be quite challenging to get put back together. After you do a few they're not too bad. The worst one I ever got was one another gunsmith couldn't get together so...

I shoot the Kerr bullets in mine sometimes. They certainly hit harder than balls but the impact is a bit higher as would be expected and they're not as accurate.

Of course they will kill a deer quite well if they are placed correctly. Personally I would limit shots to 25 yards or less but that is my own skill level. Any of those powders can be used to build an effective load for a 357.

I've got a top break H&R revolver that has the cylinder bored straight through for a heeled bullet. I found out a 357 mag case will fit without sticking out the end so I started loading those with .360" balls and 15 grains of black powder. It works...
