When you set up a production line to make stuff, the toolmakers don’t care what standards they work to; they’ll set you up with any size and thread you want. So then it’s a question of what you want. If your brother-in-law the engineer...

The few people Iíve heard from that actually tried those Herterís dies did not report a lot of success. There would be flashing between the halves, missing lead on the bands, or sometimes both. They might work after a lot of study and practice,...

If the top of the insert is stamped ď31 RĒ (or maybe ďPĒ) you should be good to go. I use one so stamped for cast boolits in all my .30-.31 caliber rifles up to the .32-20.

The “half-jacket” was like a thick gas-check, with maybe 4 times the depth of a regular gas check. You dropped the lead slug into the jacket and squeezed the assembly together in your loading or swaging press to form the bullet. The slug was...

The usual auction sites, the swaging and Buy/Sell sections of the shooting sites, and the ARTCA Site. The problem is that once they are separated from the press, it takes a Herterís specialist to identify them. To everybody else, they look like...

Here's a candle pad (or something) that I found at Goodwill yesterday. 99 cents. Made in Norway; has some construct with "TIN" in it, and says 93%.

If, once heíd connected, heíd put the next 69 shots onto the target, that would indicate something beyond mere luck. Thereís probably an equal chance of a quarry having a heart attack as being hit one time in 69 at that distance. It might even...

Check out the Mob Museum. Itís in the old Post Office, just off the Strip, IIRC. Itís the real deal; carefully curated and historical, not just a ďSnakes Alive!Ē roadside attraction. If you want to go shooting, the Desert Sportsman Range is...

Nice haul! It even has the priming arm (unique, AFAIK, to that model) and the holder for the primer tubes. Whether you use the system or not, they are not often found.

I’ve also noticed that the current Swiss powder with the pink labels is less dense than the older Swiss with the blue labels. It might even be less dense than the last lot of Goex Olde Eynsford that I bought. I made a funnel/loading chamber so...

My first centerfire, a .22 Hornet, with a Lee Loader, in 1975. IIRC, the set cost $9.95, new. Taking 3 hours to reload 50 cartridges (I weighed my charges on a RCBS scale), and the occasional primer going off on seating finally convinced me...

I think those were the core moulds that Herterís sold for their swaging setups. You could get a .22, a .38 and a .44/.45 slug that would fit in the corresponding half-jacket. Weight, of course, was adjustable.

This is a very worthy effort! Iíll have to scrounge a few .17HMR shells next time Iím at the range. You might try black powder loads for starters, especially if your test bed is a Favorite. Annealing the shoulders and case mouths of the .17...

A friend had a Judge. He threw an aluminum pop can 15 yards, loaded the gun with .410 shotshells and handed it to me. I emptied the gun at the can, raising a splendid cloud of dust all around it. When I went to pick up the can, it had exactly...

There might be a market that some Italian company could serve with a replica 99. I wouldnít have believed that anyone would be interested in a 76 Winchester copy, or (in view of the millions made) a 94 copy, either. But they seem to be selling...

Iíve found that the Ideal 457125 copy of the nominal 500-gr Government roundnose shoots good to at least 600 yards in every .45 caliber rifle Iíve shot it in. Other, more specialized designs may do better at longer ranges with the proper temper,...
