For my fishing tackle business I have been casting jigs and occasionally sinkers for over 40 years. Maybe my answers will help. Pure lead always works but ALMOST any lead will also work. There have been batches of scrap that I have found wouldn't...

quilbilly replied to a thread squib load in Hunting with CB's
I have used that load with a 53 gr boolit and the boolits aren't quite stable at 35 yards. The MV is about 1150 if memory serves. I recently bumped the load to 7.2 gr. I use these loads in my T/C Contender 10" barrel and they are extremely...

I use old rifle brass and a small pipe cutter to make my own powder measures. The handles are made from wire I twist around the case. They work great for Bullseye. It takes a little experimenting using a powder scale to get the measure just...

I use that plain base NOE 180 gr WF boolit which drops at 187 gr. from my mold in my Ruger 77/357 with a load of 11.5 gr. of 2400, small rifle primers, and Lee tumble lube. The mv is about 1350 fps on my chronograph and it gets 2 MOA groups at 100...

If your 350 legend is anything like my 357 Max, a great plinking or gopher load is the Lee plain base 125 RF in front of 5.2 gr. of Red Dot. The MV is about 1250 fps.

I have several from years past and I really miss that outfit. Their barrels were excellent and I believe they were the T/C custom shop as well as the mail order outfit. Fox Ridge and T/C were in the same town if memory serves. All the barrels I...

quilbilly replied to a thread Aluminum mould prep in Cast Boolits
Others will certainly disagree but having been using aluminum molds for over thirty years for my fishing jig business before I started casting boolits, I have used the same process with every new mold aluminum mold whether for fishing or boolits. ...

During my first tour in Vietnam, I wrote home to my Dad about this wonderful pistol I had been reading about. When I came home on leave from Asia, my Dad was at the airport to meet me and had a box in his hand. In it was a Contender and two 10"...

I have had one since the late 1970's. The only complaint I ever had was the light hammer strike on the 30/30 barrel which I resolved with using only Federal primers. It has taken many deer with either rifled slugs or the 30/30 as well as many...

This year we are adding a military rifle shoot. Bolts and semi's are welcome. The rules are TBD. A longer range Contender shoot (maximum barrel length of 12" with iron sights) is also being thought about.

quilbilly replied to a thread Gas Prices? in Our Town
Prices have gone up about 50 cents a gallon here but over the last 15-20 years prices have always gone up about 30 cents a gallon during the month of March then slowly (very slowly) gone back down about a dime or two by June. I don't think that...

I also have a T/C 10" barrel in 32-20 that has a standard 308 bore. Some years ago I did a terminal ballistics test with a 120 gr RFGC boolit at 40 yards. The MV was 1300 fps and that load remains my go to favorite. The results convinced me that...

If cost is an issue and one is a bolt gun, the Lee RNGC 160 not only shoots well in my 30/30 as well as one of my 308's. The Lee flat nose 170 or 150's also shoot well in my lever gun. They are a good way to get started until your friend gets...

The Ninth Circus COA just said no a couple days ago. There is no such right to carry in their jurisdiction which is exactly opposite of a ruling by the Ninth Circus a couple years ago.

I am using two boolits in my 338 WM, the Lee 220 and an NOE 235. With either our local blacktail deer or your whitetails, a terminal velocity of anything over 1000 fps (or probably slightly lower) will do just fine with cast lead that isn't too...

quilbilly replied to a thread .22 hornet molds in Cast Boolits
I heartily agree. Mine (a T/C carbine) likes that blunt nose boolit at about 17-1800 fps MV. The new Lee 22 cal mold that replaced it doesn't shoot in mine nearly although my 222's and 223's like the new one better.

I may have to try lighter loads with that boolit w/o the gas check in my 30/30 to get the MV down a couple hundred fps lower. I would be a delight to find that the 30/30 shoots as well as my 270 with a plain base boolit. My slowest have been...

Gas check style bolts shot without the gas check as a general rule don't shoot well. The gas check makes the boolit so much more versatile because you can shoot lighter loads as well as hotter loads. I only have two plain base 30 cal molds and one...
