After molding a batch of these bullets, gas checking them and then powder coating them, I shot them out of my 1947 Winchester 32 Special. Today I shot them at multiple milk jugs filled... After molding a batch of these bullets, gas checking them and then powder coating them, I shot them out of my 1947 Winchester 32 Special. Today I shot them at multiple milk jugs filled with water.

I just wanted to share with you the results of that experiment.

Once the 170 grain bullet was powder coated and gas checked, it weighed in at exactly 180 grains.

After recovering the bullet from the fifth milk jug, I was astounded to see that it had a perfect mushroom shape and effect, and that it appeared to retain most of its weight. Upon returning home, I measured the weight of the shot bullet, and the shot bullet weighed in at 177 grains. Only a three grain difference!

Moreover, the diameter increased from .321 inch to .640 inch.

I simply couldn’t be happier with this bullet that was cast from the RCBS mold.

By the way, load that was being used was 33.0 grains of Accurate 4064 with a cartridge overall length of 2.375 inches. This load and configuration generated a muzzle velocity of 2050 ft./s. The lead was wheel weights.

4.7g would not even cycle my M&P Shield X.

(There also is load data for CFE Pistol @ 6.2-7.1 ***6.2g would not cycle the slide, fte/ftf every time. But 6.5g ran flawlessly***)

So clearly the light loads do not work in the Shield. But initially I was mainly concerned with cycling. The 6.5g running good gave me confidence I could proceed with more loading. Anyways I would like to get up to +P territory but I cannot find any load data for it.

5.5g of Tite Group has a pressure of 33,700 and +P top end is 38,500 from what I've read. The Shield X is rated for +P ammo but I cannot find any data to support loading for it.

This is 7 1/2 inches long, 5 1/2" tall, and nearly an 1 1/2 thick at it's widest point. The slide is an inch thick. He's getting older and is recoil-sensitive. He has a Dirty Harry-era .44 Magnum revolver but stopped shooting it years ago because full-power Magnum loads were too much for him. The goal is a pleasant, accurate .44 Special load.

Components:

Lee 429-200-RF (200 gr Hi-Tek coated)
Starline .44 Special brass
Winchester WLP primers
Trail Boss powder

My question is about COAL. Hodgdon's data for a 200 gr lead bullet lists 1.450", but when I seat and crimp the Lee bullet in the crimp groove, my COAL is 1.417–1.420".

Is everyone just seating this bullet to the crimp groove, or are you seating it out longer than the groove to get closer to 1.450"?
