I have my dad’s old Crowbar, a Trapdoor .45-70. It is in good shape, as he did use it for decades, putting venison on the table, and giving it the attention, cleaning and maintenance that it should have.
I got my hands on Lees 405 HB mold, casted up and loaded a batch with Pyrodex. I also found reliable data, for smokeless powder, rated safe for trapdoor application. I cast up, and loaded a batch of these, as well.
Here is my goob question for the masses… when I loaded the Pyrodex cartridges, I looked back at my normal black powder experiences, and I used my beeswax/crisco/olive oil lube…. But when I made up my smokeless cartridges, I used my homemade Moly-Graph lube. At maximum of .459 , so I’m sure it’s due to gas cutting. Yes I’ve tried 20-1 and 16-1 alloy’s.
Question is I’d be ready to spend money on another BACO mold in .461 but would squeezing a bullet
Down to .458 groove dia. be to detrimental to the bullet for it to be accurate at mid or long range.
Inquiring minds would like to here some experience with this , never tried it before. Oh yes it’s all black powder. Thanks

Match Dates: October 3rd & 4th, 80 shot, 2-day aggregate match. Match start time is 8:30, range open at 7am. Range will be open on Friday October 2nd 1-5pm for sight and practice.

Open to: All BPCR shooters, National, State, or Club membership is not required, but encouraged.

Entries: Advanced entry and payment is required. Entry is limited to 32 shooters. You must select scope or iron sight, dual entries are allowed. If you wish to enter twice, please note it on the entry form.

She's seen better days no doubt, but still very tight. No bluing left, very very little case colored hardening. The bore clearly has rifling from one end to the other, but is rough the distance as well. The last inch or two at the muzzle shows rod wear. The wood is 100% oil soaked.
All the screw are nice and clean and has original buckhorn sight.
Serial number is four digits, low 37 hundred.

My hope here is to get her shooting well enough to fill a cow elk tag this year.

I was gifted a 330 gr. HP gould mold for this gun. Have a plenty of new starline brass and 3lbs of 2F schutzen. Dies and crimp die are on the way. Bees wax and crisco for lube.

Will most likely start at 80gr. With .060 veg card to start.

The rifle was built from parts a few years ago from a commercial Husqvarna action with matching numbers, a military Husqvarna 12.7x44R barrel cut to 29.5" and chambered for .50-70, an old Lee Shaver rear sight with a Hadley adjustable aperture disc, and a Lyman 17 front sight. The load was a Lyman 515141 (440gr) sized to .512, red can Goex 2F 61.0gr over RL-7 6.0gr in Starline cases with WLR primers. I haven't fired this rifle since last summer but decided to draw a bead on a 100 yd target to see if the sights were still on. The first shot was just in the white at 10 o'clock, so I followed up with the remaining 5 cartridges without wiping or blowing in the chamber. Fouling was negligible and the lube star showed good lube (SPG). Average velocity was 1271 fps, with a SD of 9.8. The group was 1.97" with 3 going into 0.75.

I shoot at 200 yards, the longest available locally, from a bench.... The rifle is a Model 74 Sharps manufactured by Pedersoli, chambered in 45-70 Government. Period correct tang mounted Hoke mid range peep sights. Originally, I used Goex FFg (Swiss was too expensive). Now I use Schuetzen FFFg. I shoot at 200 yards, the longest available locally, from a bench. Strings of ten shots at a six inch bullseye. I keep a pictorial record of these targets on my computer. The rifle shoots well. I have always been a fair shot. I will be 78 years old in December.

Several years ago, I noticed that any given pound of Schuetzen FFFg contained a mixture of granulations. Did some research, learned that powder manufacturers passed all their powder through a series of sieves, to separate the various granules into Fg, FFg, FFFg, and FFFFg.

Long story short, I bought three Hogentogler test sieves. One 20 mesh, one 40 mesh, and one pan. Brass frames, brass screens. I manually sift the Scheutzen FFFg, about five ounces at a time, through these sieves, which stack. Powder held on the 20 mesh screen I regard as coarser than FFFg. Powder which passes the 20 mesh screen and is held by the 40 mesh screen I define as "refined" FFFg. Powder which passes both 20 and 40 mesh screens ends up in the pan, and closely resembles FFFFg. I define this powder as "finer than FFFg" (duh).

It turns out I get about 12 ounces of "refined" FFFg, and perhaps an ounce of coarser than FFFg. The remaining three ounces are finer than FFFg. This out of a one pound can of FFFg Scheutzen.

I use 65 grains by weight of "refined" Scheutzen FFFg in my Sharps to obtain results that draw compliments from other shooters (targets available for inspection). Most gratifying. Using online ballistic calculators (I do not own a chronograph), it looks like I am a little above 1200 fps muzzle velocity (Lyman 457125 round nose bullet cast in 20 to 1 pure lead to tin).

If I were able to obtain access to a longer range, or wanted to use a slightly heavier bullet, or both, I might need a little more punch (OK, or maybe a taller sight). Would I be endangering the planet by replacing, say, five grains by weight of "refined" FFFg in my 65 grain load with five grains by weight of finer than FFFg? Google AI says "OMG don't do THAT!" If I did this, I wouldn't call it a "duplex" load; just "enhanced" FFFg Scheutzen. the chamber. With the bullet thus positioned, the second objective is reached when the bullet

In combination, these two factors help promote superior accuracy with the tapered bullet. The

firing. And the simultaneous engagement of four driving bands with the rifling helps prevent
torsional slippage of the bullet during its initial forward movement.

Lyman Tapered boolits are had in both 40/65 and 45/70, 90 etc.


There is no doubt of their accuracy but impractical for anything but targets

I have been shooting this 54 cal Sharps with the Lyman 557489 sized and lubed boolit. Made up paper cartridges driving the Lyman 557's with 75 grs of 2F. The gun shoots qiute well. I was getting 2" groups at 50 yards. Lots of fun! The 2F makes the action foul after several rounds. I swabbed the bore to keep down the fouling. Figured I could easily put Bambi in the freezer with this ole rifle. Was loading some 28ga Winchester AA's for my skeet gun when I took a sized and primed case and tried to insert it into my Sharps 1859 chamber. Wow! It fit like a glove! Measured the length of the chamber and trimmed the 28ga shell to length. The breech block closed. Ordered a centerfire breech block and an 1874 hammer from Taylors in Winchester, Virginia. They sent a Chaperal complete breech block and hammer. The Chaperal breech block fit right into my IAB Sharps receiver. Had to grind the top of the IAB lock plate to allow the 1874 hammer to strike the firing pin. Put 22 grs of IMR 4759 smokeless into the 28ga shotgun shell and thumbed a lubed and sized Lyman 557 into the AA case. They shoot great!
