I never had a need for the rifle, so it has sat in various safes for years.

Now I'm about ready to get it shooting again, but I need a base to mount a scope. From checking I did years ago, it seems a front base for a Remington 700 may work for both the front and rear. Sound reasonable?

Also some checking of Weaver charts show the front base for a Remington 700 is #36 (IIRC) but one I saw recently also called for #11 for both front and rear for the Model 720 Remington, which kind of makes sense for someone grinding a receiver.

My question is do I go with bases for a 700 or a 720? The ones for a 720 probably haven't been made since I was a baby.

It will need a loong tubed scope, but I think I still have a Weaver K-4 in the locker. Failing that I know for a fact that I have an M8 4X Leupold.

Remington 700...except the Remington already has a one-piece Redfield 'JR' base with 1" rings.

Since the Redfield label was acquired by Leupold in 2021 (and later passed to Academy Sports), the supply of Refield bases and rings has shrunk to whatever happens to be available on FleaBay...currently nada 30mm. However Leupold still offers their 'STD' bases and rings...which appear identical to the old Redfields. So, my question is: does anyone know if the the current Leupold 'STD' rings are compatible with the old 'JR' bases made by Redfield? Yeah, I know I can just as easy remove the existing base and replace it with a Pickatinny rail and use whatever for rings but that mount is original to the gun and I'd like to keep it that way.

I'm trying to work on a locked bolt 9mm AR15. The closest bolt I can find is the 6.8, but it is a little on the large side. I tried to open a 5.56 bolt on the lathe, but didn't get much accomplished. I used a high speed steel lathe bit. Should I try Carbide? or are they just too hard to work on?

It's got a lot of shots on it. Today I took it to the range and realized it wasn't ejecting the brass.
I looked at it, and the ejector doesn't seem to be fully retracting. I thought it was broken, but it doesn't seem to be.
I'm going to have to take it apart to see if it's broken, dirty, or something else.

I have a couple 204 Ruger barreled receivers sitting here. Both picked up (at two different times) for cheap w/o a bolt in them. I’m not that interested in having another 204 Ruger, but a 20 Vartarg with a magazine is another story.

I have spare bolts, triggers, stocks and everything except magazine catches (it would not be hard to make one) and a short (Hornet/221/222) magazine trigger guard. I even have a 221 Fireball magazine. I have long magazine trigger guards aplenty though.

I think the 204 Ruger barrels are 1:12 so they should be fine for 32/34 grain bullets and cutting the barrel tenon off and fitting and chambering the barrel to 20 Vartarg shouldn’t be a big deal.

It obviously needs a bit of a sand to get back down to lighter wood but what can I use that won't darken the wood?
