Does anyone use a lid on their melting pot?

Are there any disadvantages to using one? I'd think it'd help retain heat and reduce oxidation. Seems like lids should be a standard accessory to a pot.

I use a cheap Harbor Freight Dutch oven and it came with a lid. I use it all the time.

I use a lid also

For the reasons you said

Also it helps to contain the lead when those Ohhhhh shoot moments happen

'Acquired' from the wife's office (kitchen) It definitely helps the smelting to go quicker. I didn't realize how much heat I was losing without it -- it cut the smelting time in about half.

A watched pot never boils.
Lids do work for heating, and the oops moments. It takes less time to render with a lid.

I use a round baking pan, heavy metal not aluminum as the "lid" on my round dutch oven that didn't have any lid. Works fine and does cut down the time to get it to melt when smelting. I can just grab it off with channel lock plyers.

I use a lid when I'm rendering scrap and casting ingots. I don't use a lid when I'm casting boolits, unless you want to count the layer of ash I sometimes leave on top of the lead.
