Hi Guys

I have been reading as much about gas checks as I can find before I order my first bullet mold. The concept of gas checking a plain based bullet seems simple enough.

My question is : If the results of gas checking a plain based bullet are just as good as covering a bullet made for a gas check then why would someone bother with ordering a gas checked mold at all? :groner:

This concept of putting a g/c on a plain based bullet is fairly new. I don't think all the data is in just yet as to whether or not one system has a clear advantage over the other.

Maybe be too early to know that just yet ?

I am thinking about trying it on some 429421s with just one layer of coke can. I have the FreechexII and Lee sizing dies. Will see if it makes any difference in accuracy and/or the slight leading that I get with this boolit when cast with heat treated 50/50 and 45/45/10 Alox-JPW-MS lube.

Slight thread hijack. Just wondering if swaging those checks on a pb boolit will be a problem with a nose-first unit, such as the STAR?

The testing that I have done to date using my 35PB Checkmaker for .357 Magnums has shown better accuracy with the PB checks than with plain bases using the same loads.

I still run everything base first through my Star.

For .357's I will never buy a gas check mold again. The PB checks just work too good.

Are you running those gas check pb bullets at pressures that a normal pb bullet will not handle? Meaning, are you saying that, in your opinion, the gc on the pb bullet is just as good as a regular gc'ed bullet when run at the upper pressure and velocity limits of that cartridge?

I am not interested in testing the upper limits of any cartridge.

The highest that I have gone with the PB checks is 12.5 grains of 2400. I was getting the same accuracy using 11 grains of 2400 as I was with 12.5 grains of 2400 with the PB checks.

Both work just fine within the limitations of vol. Trial and error and be sure of proper size with a decent lube.
