I loaded up some test loads for my 03-A3 and went to the range, fired them off five and said to self the recoil is stiff. I laid the other five aside and looked at the bore, no lead so I set up my crono and fired the first round 2873fps. Defiantly something wrong. Layed them aside and shot some other loads and another rifle, when I got home I pulled down the four loads which had 200gr Lee boolit and 45 gr IMR 4895.
Went to the book and 43.2gr is the max for a 180gr bullet.
No harm, no lead but didn't shoot a good group at all 6" + at 100 yds with only four holes of five showing so must have flew away. Glad I only loaded ten, now stupid pay attention!

"wise men learn from mistakes - fools from their own." -unknown

Edit for clarity: This is one of my favorite quotes all-around. I posted it not as mockery or insult but to help remind new reloaders out there. Check the data in planning, in loading, and before storing the completed lot. This way you'll be given three chances to catch an error.

Similarly, I've loaded at maximum for 200gn boolits when using a 210gn boolit. They turned out to be 'safe' but hotter than I'd be comfortable shooting often. After shooting a few of 'em, I pulled the rest. So I guess I too fall into the aforementioned category.

Pay attention everyone, and remember that quote.

Drop back to 28 gr of 4895 and use a 3/4 gr dacron filler. Work up in 1/2 gr increments to 32 gr. You will be pleasantly surprised at the accuracy you find around 1850 -1950 fps with the '03 and that cast bullet.

Hey Freightman, pushing that velocity window are we? I've heard those old Springfields need re-profed from time to time, har.

now stupid pay attention!

I've taught myself many a lesson by not paying attention.
Too many for me to list here. ...............................

Good morning
When those situations arise I remind myself I am 60 and live at 8000 + feet...
And Thank God He watches over me.

God has always looked out for me or I would have been dead a long time ago. Before I was grown 16 to be exact I was thrown off a platform 25' and landed on my head on solid concrete, and survived with a short hospital stay and a head ache. Doctor said he had seen more serious damage from falling off a step stool. God was looking out for me and made me hard headed he knew I wouldn't be smart enough to keep my head out of harms way.

What do we tell folks who get injured or die from accidents? God watches over me but not you!

Good question! might say that I hadn't fulfilled my purpose here yet. Ecclesiastes 3:1-FF says there is a time for everything under the sun, so I guess that is the answer.
Thanks for asking the question I needed to study more anyhow.

I loaded 44 specials once with book data that I got from the wrong page...44 MAGNUMS! fortunately I caught it and pulled them.

You mean the ones God took home so he didn't have to watch over them anymore?

While hot for an M1, I don't think that 45 gr of 4895 with a 200 gr bullet is excessive in terms of pressure in a bolt gun.

Not that I'd shoot that combo with a lead bullet mind you.

I know Larry speaks highly of 4895 in the 28-32 gr range but my experience has always been that it shoots ok but not great. Tried in several guns with several bullets. I've done much better with the Bob S load of 42 gr of 4831 and a little filler with a 200 gr bullet (though i still prefer 2400 or SR 4759 for many applications).
