Hello all,

I am working on loading some .30-30 ammo for my father for Christmas. I didn't have the time or a mold to cast the boolits myself, so I purchased some cast boolits. The boolits came pre-sized and lubed but do not have gas checks.

I was wondering if I can just seat the GCs by hand, or do I need to run them through my lubrisizer to crimp them on? I'm also wondering if I really need the gas checks. I'm using the minimum load for the powder and boolit combo which using book numbers should be running around 1600 FPS and 26,000 PSI.

Thanks, Jeremy

Size is King ( Bore 308 Boolit 309 )
If you gas check them youll need to crimp them

First you need to know if your bullets are made for gas checks. If they are you would need to crimp the check in place, NOT just stick it on by hand. A check measures .320 before being crimped to the bullet which is a long way from.309 to .310 after crimping.

The bullets are not a plain base design. There is a gas check shank. They look like a 311041 boolit.

If they are "crimp on" GC you will want to size them to crimp them. You can adjust the stop of the lubrasizer so just the GC goes in far eough to seat and crimp without sizing the whole bullet.

Yes you will want the GC at that velocity and PSI for accuracy.

Thanks Larry. Just the information I was looking for. I have Hornady gas checks which I believe are crimp on.
