just purchased a used 50 caliber and I was wondering if any of you know what the maximum loading charge is? I'm guessing it was made in the seventies. It looks real nice but I don't want to blow myself up. It seems that most of these have a maximum charge of 100 grains or so. Can anyone enlighten me?

I myself use goex BP in 3F from my 45 cal. to 54 cal.
I would start with 75 grains and go up from there,I also find a wonder wad under the patch RB makes a world of difference.I favor walmart pillow material .018 and use a mix of 60/40 beewax and lard (no salt) and a tables spoon of olive oil.I would say 90 to 100 grains of 3F would be max: shooting different load only way to find out what the barrel likes.\
my 50 flinter likes 100 grains of 3f: My 54 loves 95 grains

IIRC my CVA 50 cal flintlock list maximums of 90 FFG and 85 FFFG, with a patched round ball. Both of these loads have done fine on PA whitetails during our after Christmas flintlock season.

See what charge it shoots best. Odds are that will be in the 75-95gr range. You shouldn't need to approach max charge levels to find its best accuracy. It's not really a question of energy when you drill a 1/2" hole through something, it's a question of did you make an accurate shot so you kill it cleanly and don't have to track it into the next county.

What Versifier said.

1 grain per caliber for target, max at 2 grains per caliber for hunting.

Yes, some gouns will handle more, but anything over 120gr just gets spit out the barrel and causes bad fouling anyway.

In the .50 bore, my best accuracy was always between 90-110 FFFg GOEX. PRB, of course!
