This may not belong in Swapping and Selling, because these classic gun books are free for the taking! You don't even have to pay shipping. All you have to do is pick out the ones you want and either download them, or just read them in one setting. Here you go:

Molly, That's a good resource. Too bad you can't download them in a pdf.

Thanks,

Actually, I THINK that someone with word recognition software can start with a decent PDF file and convert it to ordinary text. I've done stuff like that in the hazy, distant past, but don't remember the details, and don't have the software anyhow.

How about you guys who are up to date computer-wise? Anyone feel like taking on a challenge and posting word-readable versions of any of these books?

You can download the files though it is not intuitive obvious. (These instructions work for Firefox)

From the Accurate shooter page Click on "The Bullet’s Flight From Powder to Target"

- Click on the book picture on the left hand of the page. This will open the file in your browser.

- On the right hand of the page click on the PDF button. A window will open up with the choice to open or save the file.

- Save the file to your book file folder. (You may need to create this folder)

This is quite correct. The books can be downloaded in both PDF and text formats, as follows:

1. Go down to the book description, not the initial list of titles only. Click on the lower title.

2. Then click on the "read this book" option. When it opens up, you will be given the option of text or PDF formats.

Just as a test exercise, I downloaded "The Bullet's Flight ..." and saved it as a text document on my computer. It was a bit tedious, as you can only download one page at a time, equal to about four pages of the book. But that's still nearly a hundred copy/paste operations, which takes some time. The resulting document is complete, but will need a little bit of work: Its table of contents lists chapter headings separately from the page numbers, and everything is centered. Occasional words are split and there are a few similar annoyances.

I haven't tried downloading the PDF, but I looked at it, and at least the table of contents is presented well. (Edited note: The PDF format recommended by c3d4b2 below works very well, and is far faster than the text format. I recommend this option very highly. TWO thumbs up!!)

But overall, it sure beats buying from Amazon or some book search company. I give it a solid thumbs up!

If you download the PDF file the entire book will download as one file.

Absolutely! Even with my lowly confuser skills I managed to download The American Rifle by then Major Townsend Whelen. Took about 9 minutes with my half horse download speed. Thanks much, Woody

There is freeware out there called Cute PDF. Once you download it, it can be converted.

Good link, thanks!

Click on the title.
When you get to Googlebooks, click on the blue "read this book" button.
At the far right click on "PDF".
Save to file.
"The bullet's flight..." took a few seconds here.
Open with free Adobe Reader.

There's another good free utility, "Openoffice.org", for word documents, spreadsheets, etc.

I'm in Canada, followed the instructions stated, and nowhere do I see anything that says "read this book", maybe its being restricted or something.

34570 is this the same issue that you have?

Yep
No"Read this book"button on all the books that the others seem to be able to get.
Don't know why?

I believe that this was the case on one other site that had books available for download. There was a member from England that could not download these....

Yep, looks like someone don't want us foreigners reading books for free.

Would really like to have a copy of The American Rifle.

I wonder if anyone that has a decent internet speed might be willing to email us a file of the .pdf version?

Sure would appreciate it if someone might volunteer.

I think it is something to do with copyright,it might be out of copyright in the US,but not here in Australia,Canada & England,I am assuming.

There's an even larger (HUGE!!) list of free PDF books and articles just posted under "Download Shooting Classics " in the Humor and Off topic forum, which includes some of the books that are on the book source I found. It shouldn't take up more than 8 or 10 years of your reading time.

I found that it was very easy to get away from the free downloads into the purchase area where the options to read and download as a PDF discussed above are not available. If you're having trouble go back to the beginning and start over from the front. While this may not solve everyone's problem it's worth considering.
