Anyone using HS-6 with the NOE 41 LFN?

Looking for a good starting load.

I'm dying to get out and test this boolit but it's in the middle of hunting season and I'd rather be out hunting right now. Torn between two loves! arrrghh! :)

Wouldn't you know it, I've been looking for load data and HS6 most of this evening for this particular boolit and finally just decided to do a search on the boolit and first hit was with HS6.

So since I'm bringing back a 4yr old post anyone have some good data? I have a RBH 4-5/8", S&W mod. 58, 10" Contender and Marlin in 41Mag. that need fed with the NOE LFN and have two lbs of HS6 among others but read a good article using it with the 44Mag.

Is NOEs 41 LFN a 230gr boolit? If so ill be playing with mine soon!

Lefty, you are correct 230gr.

I've shot cast with HS-6 and generally try 9gr, 10gr and 11gr. I didn't chronograph it, but the 230gr (WW) Lee 413640-PB from a 2008 group buy shot well out of a 14" T/C barrel using 10gr. When I tried those charges and a commercial 200gr WFN out of a 6.5" S&W it shot poorly at 10gr but very well at 11gr and 1149fps. This was repeated in a Freedom Arms M97 with a 7.5" barrel; 10gr wasn't any good at all but 11gr tightened up and gave 1232fps. I've tried several powders with that bullet and it's been picky. Solo 1250 took 8.5gr to come around (1082fps in 6.5" S&W), but shot poorly with 7gr, 8gr and 9gr. The last of them are loaded up with VV N320 in order to deplete both the bullets and that particular powder, just to clean out some tag ends in the reloading room.

So, for HS-6 I start with, or at least will try, 11gr. From the 7.5" M97 barrel, a commercial 210gr SWC with a hard red lube was accurate at 1202fps with 11gr, a Lyman design of 215gr from a friend was excellent in that same barrel with 9gr and with 11gr, but a 200gr Remington JHP was not so great with 11gr and turned in 1051fps. That JHP loading did not shoot well from a Marlin either, at 1363fps.

The Lyman is a GC design that I've shot plain. 11gr of HS-6 gave 1269fps in a Marlin with that bullet, but when I started working again with the Lee 413640PB this past year to shoot cowboy silhouette I used 2400 because it's the suitable powder I had in greatest quantity. 13.5gr of 2400 and that 230gr bullet gives 1241fps and just under 3" at 100 yards. As the 2400 supply dwindles HS-6 will be tried for this as it's one powder kept on hand for shotgun loading. For higher speeds there's AA9.

I love how dad would always "let me buy" his latest toys (the NOE 413230 LFN mould). Sure do miss him. IIRC, he never really found much on HS-6 and we ended up loading with 231.
