I have read several times here to use Magnum Pistol Primers with 820 in 44 Magnum. I prefer Winchester Primers. Their large pistol primers only come in one size fits all, no magnums. So Will this work with 820 or should I just get a different primer brand for the 820?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron, buy a 100 of everything, and see which one fits your brass the best, as well as shoots the best for the load you have picked out. ... felix

Felix,

I wish. :(. I have to drive a hundred miles to get to a gunstore from where I live so I order everything online. So I think in primer blocks of 5K. :) I keep wondering if large magnum rifle would work okay in a Marlin 1894 44 mag. I have used rifle primers in 45acp with no problem. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Ron

No, stay with the pistol primers. Rifle magnum primers are too tall for the most part, and the winchester rifle primers in magnum style are far too powerful anyway. I find that the Federal large pistol primers standard fit my cases the best. If I were buying 5K, the federals (#150, I think) are the way to go. If they are too loose, then go to CCI which fit all of my brass on the tight side. It all depends on how tight your primer pockets are. ... felix

Okay, thanks for the information. I'll check out the Federals. At one time I used CCI, mainly because they were cheap, but I always had a problem getting them to seat so I just quit using them.

Thanks again,

Ron

The only failure to fire I've ever had was with 820, both in .357 and .45 Colt. I backed away from it for a while and now use it occasionally but only with CCI mag primers for the .357 and Winchester for the large pistol primers. In both instances it pushed the boolit into the barrel but didn't ignite the powder.

I use WSP and WLP for 357 and 45 Colt with WC820 and high pressure loads. For me, they have been flawless. Doesn't Winchester specify WLP and 296 powder? 820 is faster than 296 so it should not be an issue except possibly in very cold weather.

ron brooks,

I use CCI 550's and CCI 350's for my 357 and 44 Magnums with the WC-820 powder. Check to see what Accurate Arms recommends for their AA#9 powder and that will give you some idea. My lot of WC-820 "is" AA#9 in every aspect. Good-luck...BCB

Ive shot it with just about every pistol primer both standard and mag and havent had a problem even with fed stds. But i do load it mostly with fed mags if im going to hunt in cold weather. Ive had the best luck accuracy wise with fed mag and win mag primmers. Isnt that hard to ingite and i wouldnt think ccis would be manditory.

Winchester's primers are nearly always used with ball powders in their factory ammo. They work fine with their factory .44 Magnums full of W296. They'll work fine with WC820.

I've always used CCI 350 primers with it, and they work fine.

I've used nothing but WLPs under my WC-820 loads in the .44 mag, and so far they've all lit off just fine. The only cold weather issue I've had was with CCI mag pistol primers and H110. I also had a federal primer which came through with no priming compound once. Wouldn't ignite after three tries so i pulled it apart to have a look see.

...............I just tried WC820 in the 8x56R under cast 205gr plain based slugs. Loads were 12.0, 13.0, 14.0 and 15.0 grs. LOTS of leftover room in that case. All were primed with W-W LRP (std). They all fired perfectly without any issues whatsoever.

Federal uses a slightly more sensitive mixture than the others and their cups are about 5 to 10 tenths larger in diameter... if that'll help you. I used to use Winchester primers exclusively with my CB loads but have switched to Federal in the last few years. The main reason I purchased Winchester primers was because they were the least expensive at the retailer I visited about twice a year. Now I buy about 5K primers at a time online and have more 215's, 210's and 210M's on hand than most retailers. When I was fiddling with mainspring tension on a 336 I had an occasional misfire with Winchester primers, where under the same conditions, the Federals went bang. I true up primer pockets and measure primer cup depth below the cartridge base on all my match quality ammo.

Buckshot,

I use 16.0 grains of WC-820 under RCBS 30-180FN at 195 to 196 grains checked in the 30-30 with Fed 210 (the 210's are just for the sake of being on topic) and this combo shoots like there's no air space in the case. Velocity is about 1700 fps and the accuracy is superb.
