Gonna pick up a 223 Remingon barrel for my Encore Saturday. My plan is to follow advise I got earlier in time here and push a 1000 or so jacketed bullets through it to smooth it out before shooting cast. Anyone here shooting cast in a 223? Have a favorite boolit? Anything special or different when working with cast in a 22?

I look forward to seeing how this turns out for you John. I've been toying with the idea of shooting some cast out of my .223 NEF and seeing what I can do with it.

Good luck!

hello john,
i do not have a great deal of experience with the 22 cal cast bullets buti have recently loaded a batch of .223. i shoot these in a 16 inch contender. i used unique powder (can't remember the load) got it from the lyman cast bullet book. shooting a lyman 225415 cast from ww with a gascheck. the load is not real hot but shoots good. can hit the end of a beer can at 100yds every time. have not shot for group on paper. i believe it to be 22 mag velocity with a heaver bullet. maybe i will get to try it on paper soon.
good luck

That is TRUELY minute-of-beercan accuracy!

Light/normal/heavy load? Filler? Crimp? (I have a 21" bbl contender in 223, and the 225415 mould as well). Cast hard or soft? Alloy?

I agree wholeheartedly with DOUBLEJK...

1- Linotype
2- 225414 with gas check
and the rest of what he said:mrgreen:

In a .221 Fireball TC, 4.0 grs of Unique makes a FINE squirrel load.

John,
Try either the RCBS 22-055-FN or Lyman 225415 (both 55 grain and virtually the same design) ahead of about 12.2 gr SR4759 or about 13.5 of 3031, with SR primers. Tried SP primers but had inconsistant ignition. If you like wierd loads, try them with 14.5 gr of Reloder11 ( IMR4064 should also work) and a RP 7-1/2. Pressure too low to seal the case neck so everything ends up covered in lube and powder residue but it runs extremely small groups at 50 yards.[smilie=1:

............Be ruthless in your culling, scale the slugs and powder charges. They can be amazingly accurate. My Savage M112 single shot (12" twist) does real well with them up to 2200 fps. About 1.5" @ 100 yds. Groups open up pushing to 2400 fps another inch or so.

What is REALLY fun (well, I like it) is to shoot them over small charges of Bullseye to 22LR velocities. They're as accurate as a decent 22 shooting bulk ammo it likes. Ie: Not match grade but 1" or less at 50 yards. Even funner is that with a good scope you can watch them fly out to the target. If you didn't have to use a GC they'd be cheaper then 22RF. A GC puts them at about $2.00 or so per 50 rounds.
