Ran into a 1917 some time back that I just got cleaned up enough to shoot and fool with a little . The best I can say for the barrel is that at least I can still see the rifling lines in it ! All the bolts and screws are snug where they should be and it still won't shoot worth a hoot . It sure would be nice to see those surplus peddlers turn up a bunch of new Remington or Eddystone barrels  This is a good candidate for a new tube .

You mean I should treasure my near mint Winchester M17 that was still greased up before I started shooting cast boolits through it :Fire:

I use the Lyman 210284 at 1700fps to shoot little tiny groups :-D

Jack:
When you replace that sorry tube, send me the old one, ok?

Thanks,

Well I may have to turn to GPC but hopefully I can turn up a good HS or JA barrel .

You can have the original barrel relined that way it will still look original. I have had a couple of rifles relined with good luck they were not 30 cal but I see no reason why they can't be done as well.

Relining 30 cal high pressure barrels is a real trick. The chamber ot the throat area tends to crack over time and most gunsmiths are reluctant to do these as as soon as the crack shows it's back in for another tube. You are really better rebarreling rather than relining these.

I hope GPC's barrels are made better than the barrel bushing for a Browning 1910 I just got from them. Jeez, what a mess.

Jack, maybe you want to give sarco a call. At one time they did advertise take-offs for the 1917. Only thing wrong was that someone used the old trick of using a cut off tool in a lathe to remove some metal where the barrel butts up against the front of the receiver. The brits used a "breeching" washer when some of the conversion lits for the #4MK 1&2 enfields were converted from the 303 to 7.62 nato cartridge. Something to think about. Or maybe douglas could make one up for you. Frank

Douglas sure would know how to do it right . I wonder what the going rate for a "sporter" that has a good barrel is . Do ya think think stripping it for the barrel would be feasable ?
