My son Jacob shoots a different gun for deer hunting about every year. This old 336 30-30 is a great shooting old gun and Jacob wanted to do it old school. We put a old weaver k3 on it and it looks period correct for about the late 1950's to the 1960's. Jacob was getting easy 1" to 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards with it so I thought why not. Our first try was a bust. A rancher moved in some sheep to the are we were hunting. The next time we went out it was snowing hard. We followed a set of tracks and they were a small buck. His tag was doe only. Later we found a small bunch of does and we got in on them. I ranged her at 159 yards but we didn't have a good rest. We crawled through the snow to a large rock. Jacob used the rock to rest the rifle and took the shot. I know guys say they got a big old doe, but out of the 30 years of hunting I have done I got to say this one was one of the biggest I have ever seen. We took some pictures and I gave him my knife. I said I have watched you do this several times. It is time you did it alone. I headed for the truck to get some rope. When I got back the doe was cleaned and ready to go. I told him he did a great job. Here are some pictures. Ron

Excellent! I enjoyed the photos and the report. It is always good to see one of those Marlin 30-30's doing what they were designed to do, and to see a young fellow getting off to such a good start.

That is a trip that will stay with your son all his life. That is a nice muley. I bet she will provide many good meals.

Thanks guys.
One of the things I found out while butchering this doe. A 30-30 does NOT blood shot meat like a 243 or a 270. In fact the shot he made would have resulted in a lot of blood shot since he hit the shoulder on the way out. It had almost no blood shot at all. I am going to have to test this little rifle a little more. I can't let the boy be the only one to kill a deer with it.

You know, that boy is probably going to pick your retirement home. I did you a favor, you might want to do the same for yourself.

Nice story and great pictures. The old .30-30 has put a lot of meat in the frying pan, and your son is dragging proof positive of that.

What was the load he was shooting?

My brother has my grandpas old 336 30-30 from the late 40's early 50's, it has put alot of meat on the families table since grandpa bought it.

Ron: I was, in my subtle way, trying to point out that someone might live to regret making a negative remark about his son on a public forum.

What negative remark did I make about him? No where in the story did I make a negative remark. In fact I let him gut her with out me being there and told him he did a great job. We made a great stalk, he made a great shot. I don't know what your talking about? Highlight it for me.

His load was a 150 gr Sierra with 32 gr of IMR3031. Man that load shoots good out of that rifle. Ron

Ron, in my original post I quoted a post made by "docone31" and suggested he might want to consider removing his remark about his son being dumber than a box of rocks. I guess I should have left it alone but remarks like that say a LOT more about the man than it does his son.

I'm sorry you thought I was referring to you or your son.

I expect your son will grow-up to be a man you're proud of. :!:

Nice mulie doe; brings back a lot of fond memories from when I was growing up in Colorado. Maybe I'm becoming more conservative as I age, but I really like the old traditional cartridges like the .30-30, .30-40 Krag, .257 Roberts, etc. They still perform very well, when used within their limitations.

I agree Nicholst55 I hope to use my Marlin 336 CB in 38-55 with my Home cast Ranch Dog .379-235 RNFP/GC :)

I have a 1975 made one, excellent bore, but showing lots of exterior saddle scabbard wear. I also have an old Weaver 2.5x scope to mount on it. That will be a good freezer filler I'm thinking. It will match my 444 which will have my other small power Weaver which is a 3x. They will make a fine pair, I am undecided which scope to put on which rifle. Not much difference in them though.

The mould I have for this gun is an old lyman ideal 311291 170 gr. I am planning on trying to Paper patch this bullet. I didn't have the gear for it coming up to the summer shooting, but I do now. I hope that for next year I have the paper patch loads figured out and doing well.
Jacob is a cool hand with a rifle and the 30-30 was a fun "fit" for him. He wishes his grandma Ruth would have been able to see it come together. She passed away almost 1 year ago on the day he shot his doe. Ron

That's all he's talkin' about. Nice Hunt, you can be very proud of that young man, he has a skill for life now. I love hunting stories, like venison pretty well too.
Congratulations to you son (and yourself)

Ok I am the one that is not too quick. I didn't get it but i do now. Thanks guys. I was the most proud when he used my old time winchester to get his cow elk. I got a lot of pictures of that boy that make me smile on a cold winter day when nothing is going on. Ron
