I was looking to ID a bar of unknown metal today, I kinda thought it may be Babbitt, but which type I wasn't sure. I just sold my Antique Drag Saw to a friend of mine and he is restoring it. Tears it down and says the rod bearing is Babbitt and he needs to rebuild it.
I kinda thought I had some Babbitt in my junk of lead, as my Father inlaw was an old Mill Rite and they used lots of Babbitt in the mills around here. I did do a LEE hardness test on the ingot....As good as I can measure the indent it looks like it's about .025-.030 " ,Off the provided lee scale... I also found a sale on e-bay...some "winner" paid $50.00 for an ingot !! ....."PJ"

My ingot is Marked : American Smelting and Refining Company ( End is cut off....)
Federated Metals Division

Website: lots of pics of Ingots and ID logo's...

Hope this helps in case you have any.... "PJ"

Lots of luck. Most babbit is high in tin and antimony. When used sparingly as a sweetener , the copper content is negligible so its generally not a problem.
Try adding 3% to lead and see what happens.
