Had loaded some ammo, but not alot, because it was supposed to be a winter storm in today and alot of wind, so figured I would just shoot for velocity/primer flattening.

Wind was a little late in starting, so went off to range to get sighted in and shoot a few rounds to check on velocities.

Took more rounds than I thought to get sighted in(6) and one over chrony, so left 3 for target. Lower left part of target. Velocity 2048 fps Lee 45-300, ww/lino in 5/1 ratio, Gator 458 rifle checks, lbt soft blue. Been nice if the one on the left would have been with the other two.

Second batch was middle of target, 462420 sized to .454", velocity 1745 fps, not too good. Third batch was a GB 295gr swc pb sized to .454, velocity 1949 fps, mabye little leading at muzzle, think I pulled the lower shot.

Suprizing group was last one. 42gr Lil gun, same Lee 45-300fp as in first group. Velocity 2621 fps. Used mag primers for this load. Hit about 2' higher than other loads, had to lower settings so only 3 rounds left.

Went back to range today (Cold!!) and tried some loads with RE7 and the RD 350gr sized to .454" and the 460420PB also sized to .454". Three rounds to adjust scope, one over chrony for the 460420 boolit (1716 fps--sucker kicked a bit), three on target (pulled low left one) then one at 222yd gong.
Shot the RD boolits, 1736 fps, little less kick, but grouped fairly well (top 4).

Couple of drawbacks, on the 4th shot with the 460420pb boolit, noticed something drop in the snow at the edge of the firing line. Finally figured out it was my front sight!! Part that locks the insert in, sheared off. Second, is I am having problems with FTF, failure to fire. Don't know if it is the brass, or the gun.

rockrat,

What type of FTF and when? Was it during both trips or only on the second cold one? It could be some lubericate freezing/gelling inside the action due to the cold. Also when you say failure to fire are you getting primer strikes?

Oh boy, I had the ftf problem too, did you get the gun used? same question, are you getting primer strikes? I had to send mine to Smith, they swapped for a longer hammer, stronger spring and gave me a new cylinder, FREE! not a penny including shipping. It shoots better now than it ever did.

I sent it to Ruger and they replaced the firing pin. Probably won't change anything as it was within .002" of another Ruger #1 I have.

Probably have to send it back again, on their dime this time, and maybe they will get it right. Who knows.
