So am I the only guy out there that hates when a big X-frame shooter comes up and tells you how useless that 45-70 Contender is compared to their 460 Mag. "That gun can't shoot far or fast enough. Why my 200gr bullet is going 2100 fps." I swear I am liable to shoot the next man that says that. Here I am shooting the whimmpy 45-70 with Lee C457-500-F with 48gr Varget(IIRC) and I am being told it is useless. And I am shooting cast while they are throwing condoms around.

So rant aside has anyone tried to use cast light boolits in a 45-70 to achieve these "untouchable" velocites. I am thinking that I may try this if no body here thinks I will end myself prematurely. With Accurate molds I can find the style that should work. I know it would have to be gas checked.

Thanks for reading.

Hogdon's "Lever Action" reloading section lists 300grn. J-words @ 2424fps. out of a 24" barreled rifle. I don't know why you couldn't drive a 200 grainer to 2000fps out of a shorter barrel.
I'm driving 350grn. cast to 2000fps out of my #1 .45-70 w/a 22" barrel. That's in the "Lever Action" realm of pressure.
It should be VERY doable. I just don't know where to tell you to start in terms of what boolit & powder.

Tell him yours is going too fast and you're working on slowing it down. The 45-70 is very accurate and effective at lower velocites with a big boolit and you can use it on moose. [smilie=1:

Tell him is he willing to go out to a given distance and see how worthless that 45/70 is? I would not bet my life on it.

I tend to ignore simpletons.

Adam,

A little off topic but I hear the same thing from the Ruger guys when I show up with black powder loads and a SAA clone. All I ask them is how do they improve on the complete penetration I get with my load? So far only very few of them have had a reasonable answer.

Why stoop to their level? If shooting 300, 400 500 or heavier boolots is your thing, let them do theirs. However, if you like to fiddle with things, try the collar button boolit (or similar) and crank it up.

Ask him to sit down next to you and show you how well he can shoot his magnum. My bet is that most of them can not shoot them very well.

Groo here
The 45-70 with 300 gr can break 1800 from a 14 in using " J-word"
The big problem is with lighter boolits there is not enough mass to light the larger
amount of powder the case requires.
My Lee 340gr should get close to 1800 - a 300gr might hit 2000 Try MIR3031.
PS. Ask them what a 300 goes at???????????????????

45-70 with Lee C457-500-F with 48gr Varget - That is a pretty stiff load out of a Contender pistol.

I shoot 13 gr of Trailboss with the Lee 330gr .457 bullet, it is a very accurate and pleasant load. I haven't tried it on any game yet, but I am fairly sure it would go through a deer.

I also shoot big bore S&W 500s with full loads and they are tons of fun (flash and boom).

HI.
I am with you, I shot a x frame 500 once , bruised my hand's palm so I could not shoot my 44 for a whole week.
Shot a 405gr. load out of a 45/70 in a BFR and THOUGHT IT WAS TOTALLY COOL.
Better designed grip for me, at least.

Yeah it is a stiff load. I used it in a match to knock over a 102 pound full footed and then some steel plate cut into the shape of an elephant. When I was testing the load at the range, a x-frame shooter came up and started to talk to me. To make the load I went to the Speer manual looked at the trapdoor loads for 500 grain bullets and added a grain to my safe max. I don't shoot many of these but my extraction is fine and I don't have any flattened primers.
My load of choice is a 340-400 grain bullet and 25 grains of 2400. I tried trailboss in my rifles but have never let it fly out of the contender. I will the next time I am loading.
Thanks everyone for their responces. Also I know the guy with x-frame and have seen him shoot. He shoots like 44man and thought for a while that it was him. Then I realized that 44man does not live in my neck of the woods.

so is this the guy that was a jerk? I actually have never met anyone like that except on forums. I shoot big bore guns, but I'm not like mine is better than yours. I am always interested to see what others shoot. I haven't really met a gun I don't like

Yeah the guy I know was the jerk. He is not usually like that. Same guyamoretti recently said cast was useless to take large game bit good for toppling steel. I started to ignore him and not take him too seriously after that.

"My load of choice is a 340-400 grain bullet and 25 grains of 2400"

I've tried everything from 22 to 26 of the same. 25 grains shoots really well with a 425 ranch dog sized down to .451 with 2 wraps of 9# onion skin. It has worked quite well in my T/C and marlin CB.

I tried the 25 grs of 2400 in a 340gr lbt. I liked it and am going to try hunting with it next years.
