Likewise. I just picked up a 7x57 in excellent shape. I was thinking about starting with the Lee, having had good luck with them in .309, .312, and .323. Anybody tried it and what do you think of it?

...............If your 7x57 is modern then most any 7mm mould you fancy should work. On the other hand, old military 7x57's can be problematic in several ways even if like new. Many have very long throats and leades. Some have very generous chamber neck OD's and then there can be oversize grooves which make boolit fitting a problem.

The 7mm is like the 8mm in not being overly blessed with mould designs. In your listed weights RCBS makes a nice mould for a 168gr borerider, and if your rifle will support it, it is a fine slug and about the heaviest out there. Luckily I have a Brazilian contract M98/08 that will actually engrave the nose and handle it accurately to 2400 fps. At least to 50 yards!

Even a bigger surprise is a 1897 Rem RB in 7x57 with does as well. However the chamber neck is so generous that you can just about drop a 30 cal slug through a fired caseneck.

Best bet first off is to slug your barrel to see where you're at.

I've posted this before, but it answers your question. The best bullet I have tried for long-throated military Mausers came from LBT. A friend with a Venezuelan Mauser filled a case with lead, chambered it, then dropped a soft lead rod (obtained from LBT) down the barrel and drove it into the throat with a brass rod and a hammer. He sent the throat slug to LBT, who made the mold for $125 as I recall. It drops a 180 grain boolit that shoots like a house afire out of his and my rifles.

I know that is about double the price of over-the-counter molds, but it works. A couple of guys with military 7mms could go together.

RCBS 28-168FN works for me. The RCBS 28-168SP is readily available, I got the FN at auction, it's on their special order list.

Only in 7-30 Waters and 7mm TCU. Haven't tried it in my 7mm Mauser. I have other moulds that work fine in my 1916 7mm mauser.

Mark, what moulds are you using for your 1916 mauser. I have one also and would like to cast for it.

Thanks

Roy

287308, 287442 HP, 287346 HP, 287405 HP and RCBS 28-168. They produce hunting groups so far. Some are better than others. The 287405 and 287308 are the best performers.

I have an old SAECO mold, marked 072, that makes a great 7mm bullet. Haven't used it in years, hopefully I'll get another 7mm some day.

Cheers,

Phil
