I have a stainless Redhawk with the 7.5 barrel. It shoots good and all in all is a decent hand gun, however it is about as handy as an armfull of coat hangers. I could sell it and buy a 4" redhawk, but I am guessing I'd have to pony up as much $ as having this one re barreled. Any suggestions?

Why change it? Just have it shortened.

I hear what yer sayin' about long bbl'd Redhawks. I used to have a 7.5". I own a 9.5" Super now. It's a good hunting gun (I call it a rifle with a handle) but no carry gun for sure.
So I got a 4" in .45 Colt. I sure like it and it is a much better carry piece, tho still no small concealment arm. Not a problem for me as I usually OC anyway.
I have a friend that does a nice job of shortening them. But if yer gonna spend most of the price of a gun to get that done, you could just go plunk down the money and end up with a 7.5" and a 4"

Oh- the bbl on a Redhawk is really on there. A gunsmith will get it off, but it not an easy job. I do my own minor 'smithy work, and have built guns, but wouldn't consider unscrewing a Redhawk bbl.

Contact Ruger, they might be able to put a shorter tube on it for you on the cheap. Also, Bowen is on the lookout for Redhawk barrels, you might want to contact him for input or options.

I have a 4 inch Redhawk and its about become my absolute favorite 44 magnum. What a powerhouse.

I would be interested in taking that long heavy clumsy pile of coat hangers off your hands....PM me your best askin price!

You might try to simply straight trade the gun off for a 4" RH. Might even be someone on this sight. I would give the Swappin and Selling section a try.

i had the same delima for years i had a 8 3/8 s&w 629 classic i bought it years ago for hunting . i dont use it for that purpose any more as i bought a 454 casull about 12 years ago , but i still enjoy shooting the 629 buts its to darn heavy for extended shooting sessions i like to shoot 50 shots off hand at 50 yards. i also thought about cutting the barrel , changing the barrel or trading for a new gun well i decided the cost to do any was more than i wanted to pay ! than one day i found a friend who wanted to buy my 8 3/8 629 he agreed on the price but i told him i had to do some checking around , well a new one was out of the question then i happend to go to a small gun shop and they had a slightly used 6 1/2 inch 629 -6 for only $75.00 more than i was selling my 629-3 for, so i bought it! and sold mine to the friend ! and now i am happer than a pig in mud , as a bonus it shoots all 3 cast bullet loads just as accuratly as the old 629

Cool! Are those Dan Wesson barrels? Who did the work? And if you don't mind, how much did it cost?

why sell it ? just buy another with the barrel length you want then you have two to play with. selling a gun to buy another just does not make sense to me.

I have shortened the barrel on several Milsurp's but they were <100.00 guns. I guess the cheap way to go is for me to cut it off myself. Hack saw, good single cut file and a quality square, file in a new dovetail and I'm in business. Great, another project :-)

Just have the barrel shortened by a competant gunsmith. Shouldn't cost much.

And a very nice job was done!
What may I ask did that set you back?

Redhawk barrels are almost unobtainable. I've been looking for a short 44 mag barrel for a GP44 conversion for some time.

$130.00
I'll mount the scope back on it for testing tomorrow, I'd like it to shoot the same 2 loads it did before because I have a bunch loaded up already. If it does, I'll put the rear sight back in and practice, if not well there are lots of combinations I have been thinking about. :-)
