What 357 said.

I have my first 22 LR back with me in the safe, too. Dad bought it with S&H Green Stamps ~1967 or so. Winchester 290 self-loader. One thing I noticed after inheriting it in 1995 is that ammunition quality REALLY changed over its lifetime. As a kid, any ammunition Dad bought for the rifle ran like water through the critter. These days, only CCI Mini-Mags are 100% reliable. The bulk-boxed stuff chokes and stops up the works in one fast hurry. Thankfully, the Ruger 10/22 and 22/45 will eat ANYTHING, and run well on trash ammo.

I worked bagging groceries all summer of 1966 to get the $50 to buy my 511X, a spare magazine and a brick of WW Super-X ammo. I still have it and have collected the other members of the 5XX family. Nice rifles.

Yes, I dug out my Winchester 190, which used to digest anything.

EVERYTHING jams it now.

Yes, I took it apart and cleaned barrel and chamber several times.

I still have all of my "first" .22's. The ones I learned to shoot with were my Pop's Marlin 81DL and Remington 12C. The Marlin he won sometime after the War by selling salve and greeting cards door-to-door. The first one that was mine, all mine, was a Mossberg autoloader, from Christmas 1965. The first one I bought with my own money was a Winchester Model 52 with a Swiss-cheesed receiver for $35. All are still under my care, but sadly gathering mostly dust now rather than the little critters they should be gathering.

I have 2 511's and a 510. Great rifles.

My first 22 was an Ithaca 49. Next was Winchester 320. Wish I'd kept the 49 and I was a bald headed fool to sell the 320. DUMB!!!

In '64 when I left for the Army I left my JC Higgens M103.18 at the ranch. I had bought it when I was 12 years old at Sears. Somewhere it got traded off for something by my step father and I always regretted that. Last year my brother tracked it down for me and gave to me at Christmas. It had seen some use as the but plate was repalced, the bolt was forged and it was D&T'd for a side scope mount. The bore is still great and it also shoot great after all these years. It also is a single shot with pull back cocking. Brings back a lot of good memories........glad you still have yours too:-)

Larry,
I put this scope and mount on a couple of years after I bought the rifle,
The scope is a 3/4" dia. tube / Bushnell 4x and the mount was designed by Bushnell for the grooved receiver on the rifle.

They must have redesigned the reciever after I got mine. Mine has no scope grooves and has a split rear reciever with the bolt handle root locking in the loading port. Strange they still called yours the same "103.18" model.

Mine also has a split rear reciever with the bolt handle root locking in the loading port.
The model number is 103.181 on mine.
your model number is 103.18

other than adding the scope, the only thing I did on mine was to refinish the stock

M103.181...looks like they did change the model #;-)

No grooves for a scope mount on mine though. Whoever had it in the interum forged the handle and the right side of the reciever is D&T for a scope base. Probably one of the old Weaver type, guess I'll start looking around at the gunshow and old gunshops for one. Might be able to modify something to fit. Mine still shoots good but I have to put a jewlers loop with correction in front of my right glasses lens to be able to focus on the front sight. It is still lots of fun to shoot....I think more so now than when I got it.......:-)

The 514 was my first .22, paid twelve bucks for it in a gunshop with no paperwork at all.
Most people back then thought nothing of a kid owning a .22 rifle. I don't remember a single shooting by school kids back then, and some carried rifles and pitols to school for protection from feral dog packs.
