Would I be crazy to order a mold for the 460 that is not gas checked. going about 1400 fps, but pressure would close to max for it. I'm guessing I should just listen to what everyone writes and get a gas checked boolit. However, if the boolit fits it fits. Right? anyway tell me what you think, and if anyone is experienced with plain base and high pressure rounds. thanks

People run the 45-70 with plain base boolits, at nearly 40K psi, and are OK as long as they are kept at 1700fps or so, don't they?

would like to know myself, as I have a 460 on the way. rifle though

460 runs 60k, thus my concern, but my velocity will be lower. looking at getting 500 grain boolit. Please don't tell me I don't need anything that big. I know I don't, I don't need much of anything I have. I just really don't want to put a gas check on there increasing my cost.

If your alloy matches your pressure/velocity, boolit is sized properly, and you are using a good lube, should not be an issue.
I was a chicken and went with all GC molds for my 460. GC ads one more step but for me it is peace of mind?
There is a formula for figureing the alloy for pressure/velocity in Verals book, I can dig it out if you would like it? I have a buddy the swears by it.

well I just read on a thread where 44man said he was shooting pb to 55k so maybe it will work. If I'm wrong though it's about a 100 dollar mistake. small price to pay considering the amount of money I spend on this stuff. hopefully he will chime in

The fit "shouldn't" be a problem. though with me you never know. the mold will be sized to what I want so that's not a problem. I understand the peace of mind, and yes I would love to have a formula.

I wounder if I may intrude on this thread and impose on someone here for some brass.
I would like to buy 4 pieces of 460 brass. This will be for a three round ball load for a Bond arms 45/410 derringer. At present I am using 454 brass but it is not long enough for three ball, only two.
Apologies for the intrusion but this seemed like a likely place to ask.

I have made all of my molds for the .475, .500 JRH, .500 Linebaugh and even the .50 Alaskan, PB.
My best shooting boolit from a friends .454 is also a PB.
I just use WD, WW metal. I can get tad smaller groups with a little harder alloy, adding some antimony and tin to WW's.
A 500 gr in the .460 would be something else and does not need high pressures or high velocities. That thing at 1100 fps would go through any animal on earth.
I have never been a fan of the .454 or .460 because the whole premise was a flatter trajectory for long range hunting with lighter bullets at the cost of high pressures, special bullets or boolit damage. Either with a good, heavy boolit at about 1350 fps will do it all. Any faster presents more problems.
I shoot revolvers to 500 meters but you will have a hard time making me shoot at a deer past 100 yards and I prefer 20 to 40 yards. I will never brag about the distance I shoot one. One at 10 yards is as good as one at 100. All of my deer are shot off hand, if I need a rest, I would use a rifle.
