Hey everyone. My local powder and primer dispensary has a selection of bullet molds available that I peruse whenever I am there. They have a collection of various .44 Caliber Ideal/Lyman molds, so of which were quite rare, like a 429422 HBSWC, and a 429398 HBWC, that I have purchased.

One of the molds they have is a "Lyman 44S" Slug mold. It's basically a smooth cylinder with a screw at the bottom to produce slugs of various weights and lengths. No lube grooves, crimp grooves, etc. My question is this: what the heck is it good for? Slugging a barrel? Why would you need a special mold just for that? Any ideas? Should I buy it?

I have done several searches trying to find more info on it, but to no avail. The term "Slug Mold" has a connotation all it's own.

Lyman made them in .30, .38 and .44 so the caster could make his own cores for his bullet swaging operations. Otherwise, it was necessary to buy lead wire of the proper diameter and cut it to length.

You put the cast (or cut) core in the jacket and swaged the assembly into a bullet.

So basically, unless I can find the swaging set up the former owner had, it's worthless to me? Oh, well. Thanks for the response!

his swaging system may be no more than a few dies and a ram

If you don't want it, could you let me know the contact info, so I can get it? Just started swaging, and it would be awesome to have an adjustable core mould!

I think roysha has dibs on it, he sent me a PM. If he doesn't want it, I'll send you the contact of the place. They weren't open today (Monday) anyways.

As luck would have it, I have been invited to lunch in Melbourne today, and I will stop by and see if they still have this unusual mold. I will put it up for sale on here as soon as I have 25 posts or whatever, and don't worry, I won't put too much of mark-up on it. ;)

Ok! Got it! Here are some pics. I buy things that are neat, even if I don't have a use for them. But I'll sell it for what I paid when I get permission to do that.
