I need loads for a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 utilizing the 311291 that are capable of cleanly killing deer. It's thick country here and a shot longer than 50 yards is rare.

I have 4064, some 3031, 4759, and unique on hand. I might have some 4895 left but not much.

If there isn't a good combo using these ingredients I need to know that too. I do have some jacketed pills kicking around that I can use.

There's a young man of 12 or 13 that has a 30-30 that was given to him by his grandfather. No-one in the family hunts and he wants to go out and has asked me to take him.

Thanks a lot for any help you night be able to give.

26gr 3031 seems to come recommended pretty often. It'll be pushing 2K fps.

+1 on the 3031, although Unique will do just fine with that boolit weight and close range. I'd stick with 3031 and work up with published data.

with the lyman 311291 app 173g bullet

the lowest velocity loads in my book are with Unique

in 30-30 with the 311291 with Unique
start 8.0g 1160fps max 11.0g a 1610 fps

there are other powders that might be better but that is the lightest i have in my book

I have the 311291 mold and have used a variety of powders with good results. One that is mild and accurate for me with both the TC contender barrel and the Marlin 336 is 16.5 grains IMR 4227, CCI 200 LR primer with measured velocities of about 1500'/s. It is a great caliber and should do good for what you are wanting to do. I agree with the recommendation of 3031 also but for some reason I have only used it with j bullets and don't have it with my cast loads.

25 gr Reloader 7 and work up. Gives 2100+- in Marlin 336 with 2-3 inch groups at 100 with irons.

17/4759 for about 1.8 K fps
28/4895 or 3031 for about 2.1 K fps

Any of the above will kill a deer cleanly with proper bullet placement. If you don't place the bullet properly, then nothing else matters much.

Mark load that young man up 18 gr of SR4759, little recoil and that young man can shoot it all day...it will kill great at 50 yards....I have young girls shoot that load and they love it!

This venue self-suggests some soft-point casting, a la the BruceB method. I have some #311041 castings waiting for emptied 30-30 casings. These used #257420 donor boolits in pure lead (75 grains) for point forming.

Cast the 311291s of WW/lead at 50/50 and air cool. I size at .311, use Javelina lube and Hornady or my own GCs. Load over 28 gr H4895. 1900+ fps out of a Carbine and 2050+ out of a 24" rifle. It will be accurate and deadly on deer with in your mentioned ranges. Will be better but not necessary if you HP 1/3 the nose length with a 1/8" Forster HP tool.

Chargar and Brad H! Thanks for the info below. Exactly what I need and with the powders I have on hand.

17/4759 for about 1.8 K fps
28/4895 or 3031 for about 2.1 K fps

The powder measure is already loaded with 4759 and set for 17 grains. I was using that load in my Krag. I am in your debt.

All the best,

Mark

I too have had success with reloader 7, though at 26 graines pushing Seaco 160 gr, Ranch dog 165 gr, Lyman 31141 160 gr, or the RCBS 180.
I have not chronied the loads or shot targets for groups, but they always seem to find the mark.

I tried the ReLoder 7 load Dan Cash recommended a couple years ago. CEHarris recomended24 grains but 25 grains was just right for my Trapper. Didn't move from that.

As you already have some 3031 you can start at 25 grains which works real well. I ran a series of test loads with that and also 26,27,28,29 and 30. 30 runs pretty close to factory spec. I found that 27 grains of 3031 gave me the best accuracy in my 94's. No leading and moderate recoil. Burns clean. LLS

Mark,

30 grs of 4064 has given me good results with that bullet. Velocity is 2,000 f.p.s. + - And.......with that loading it becomes a true 30-30 with 30 grs. of smokeless powder.
