DoctorBill

Yesterday I visited Craig's List.

Some guy was selling a "Reloaders Bonanza" for $125.
Said assorted Reloading "stuff".

I messaged him and asked what was in this "Bonanza"....

He replied,
"Bonanza includes:
Die sets: 30-06, 30-30, 22-250, 308 Win, 44 Mag, 25-35, 32 Win, 38 spec, 45 ACP

RCBS & Pacific presses
multiple scales, funnels, and shell holders
powder measure w/stand
case puller kit
primer feed
Hornady and RCBS powder dispensers
bullet puller set
case trimmer
thousands of primers
hundreds of hunting rifle caliber brass
1000 assorted bullets
asst accessories."

I jumped on it and said I'd buy it.....OMG !
God smiled upon me - again.

Here is what was in three boxes of goodies which were his Dad's
and he wasn't interested in reloading (Estate Sale).

There must be almost $500 worth of reloading equipment here !

http://www.mynetimages.com/b4b26c8af8.jpg

A lot of 30-06, 30-30, 308 and 22-250 Brass
http://www.mynetimages.com/ae2b021ae0.jpg

These cans of powder are full. Maybe 2500 Lg Rifle Primers!
The prices marked on the powders are $3.98 ! 500 rds SWC Cast .45 ACP.
http://www.mynetimages.com/202a698451.jpg

Hundreds of Sierra and Hornady FMJ bullets !

http://www.mynetimages.com/a15472e8c8.jpg

http://www.mynetimages.com/bca77dd614.jpg

I don't have most of the rifles but I can sell the Dies for the ones I don't
have - or keep them in case I 'obtain' those rifles.

I have the pistols.

I still haven't figured out what all is here !

Incredible ! ! !

The Moral of the Story ?
Keep your eyes peeled for local Craig's List "Goodies" - Sporting Goods section.
I always do a "Brass" search and MOVE on it !

This guy says he was getting inundated with E-Mails.

Well, I have pulled everything out of the boxes and inventoried them
in the following photos.

http://www.mynetimages.com/88529e768c.jpg
There is an old 30-06 "Dud" there on the lower left with powder in it
(you can hear it when shaken) and a dented primer !

I need help identifying what is labeled Unknown or with ????

http://www.mynetimages.com/5da189cffa.jpg

The last photo shows various screws and whatchmacallits.

Please help identifying them.

The little thing with the X above it is some sort of plunger.

I think the two aluminum things below and to the right of X are for
placing primers in one of the presses.(?)

I hope there are few missing parts !

Remaining stuff is several Primer Trays and bullet boxes.

There is rust on a lot of the Iron parts and some of the Brass has corrosion spots.
All this was probably kept in a garage on the floor !

Nice find!!! About 4 years ago I had a slimier find on Craig's List with over $500 in powder alone let alone the two presses and other things to with it. Just watch the powder and primers. The only squib loads Ive ever had were form some of that lot that had not been stored well at some point.

the thing with the X above it may be a decapping pin for certain types of reloading dies.

Your "unknown D" is a gizmo for mounting a reloading die and a powder measure in a single stage press at the same time.

Place one hole on top of the press and screw the die through it until it is adjusted with the proper contact on the shell holder.

Place the powder measure in the the other hole and secure with a lock ring on the bottom.

fryboy
11-15-2010, 12:47 AM
chargar is correct , d is a powder measure mount ( rcbs i believe )
part of unknown a is a crank from a lathe type trimmer , it was possibly taken off to use with a drill ( dont think that's the screw for it tho but i know it isnt the other one ) the rest looks like part of another trimmer only the screw that holds the case in but could be the top of a collet type puller
seater die is a different profile seating stem for the 38 dies
the solitary " ? " looks like a decapping pin and perhaps a expander

the rest i cant see clear enough , dont matter tho - great score !!

Before I sell these Wilson "Shell Holders", I would like to have someone explain to me
just what they are for !

What is their function ?

They must fit into one or more of the tools that came with all this stuff.

Are they still sold somewhere ?

Ah Ha - Found them on Google.
Midway sells them for $40 like this...pic is of my unit. The Holders are $8 each.

I have the LEE Case Trimmers - so if anyone wants to buy the entire shebang,

SOLD - pending payment receipt. Jesus ! I sound like some street hawker now !

Here is all the Brass that was spread throughout the three boxes of
goodies I obtained.

http://www.mynetimages.com/07dcd9d9d8.jpg

This Brass is DIRTY, DUSTY and OILY.....

I have never obtained Brass in this condition.
Everything I had before this was either new or had been cleaned and polished.

I had bought Birchwood-casey Brass Cleaner solution, but I actually
can't see any cleaning action in the three minutes one is supposed to
soak the Brass in it - (Following the Destructions).

Some of this Brass even has corrosion spots on it (arrows in photo below).

http://www.mynetimages.com/926dde7d32.jpg

I just deprimed them with an old manual depriming tool and a small plastic
hammer while watching "Pawn Stars" on TV.
I won't get these filthy cases near my dies.....

I am trying the old 50:50 white Vinegar soak followed by extensive rinsing.
Read that that was used back in WW I era and supposedly works like Gangbusters !

Did OK, but I also soaked them in Dishwasher Detergent for 30 minutes.
Still they feel oily - like with "One Shot" case lube that has dried....

I have a large Vibratory Brass Tumbler which I will now use.

the 25-35 is an obsolete ( or at the minimum a semi obsolete ) round that's basically a 30-30 necked down to 25 caliber

as for the dirty brass , cleaning it should work but the corroded stuff you should trash as the brass where it corroded is severely weakened and you risk your own life and limb by reloading and firing it ( as well as any unsuspecting and innocent bystanders )

The roller handle in "A" & screw go with the "powder dispencer" the plunger for the barrel is "powder dispencer adjuster" for the green RCBS powder measure ( it came with a small & large one). The other item in "A" looks like it's for a RCBS case trimmer and goes with the shell holder collets you have marked RCBS 1 & RCBS 3
The collet & plunger marked "?" looks like the primer seater for for the RCBS auto primer feed for the Rockchucker press ( 2 comes with it small primer & large primer)
The two screws "B" go with "D" (already id as the bench mount for RCBS powder measure) the other item in "B" is a powder dispencer that screws in the end of powder measure
the "38 seating plug" looks like the bullet seating plug from one of the die sets to match a certain bullet style
I can't quite make out "C" but if it has wire bristle on one end it's a primer pocket cleaner that fits a RCBS handle
I can't see the brass part in the package to make it out!

BTW..Congats on the great buy!!

Dr. Bill.. The 25-35 is a Winchester factory round that was fairly popular before WWII. It was chambered in the Model 94 levergun. Winchester made a short run of them a couple of years back, but other than those they have been out of print since 1941.

Those old Lyman dies are good dies and in that caliber would be worth $40.00 or so.

I will buy that old "unknown D" powder measure thingie from you for a fair price. By fair, I mean cheap..real cheap!!!

DoctorBill
11-17-2010, 11:41 PM
fryboy - I crushed the cases in my vise where I could feel indentations
due to corrosion - after I had done a Vinegar Wash, multiple water
rinses, drying, followed by tumble Polishing.
99% of the cases are beautiful now.

swheeler - You are most welcome. Glad to do it.

daddyfixit - Yow....I have to study that post !
"C" has a bristle so it is a primer hole cleaner - I'm happy to have that !
I find that all of "A" goes to the RCBS Case Trimmer.
I have a bunch of Collets for it (shown in the photo with the three
white WILSON boxes in it.

Chargar - The 25-35 Die Set is sold to a rancher in WA.
That Unknown "D" - I want to assemble the Powder Chargers for the
Pacific (now Hornady) and the RCBS presses before I sell that part.
If it is part of those assemblies, I will of course keep it.

Question:
I opened the RCBS 30-06 DIE Set and found two deprimer/sizer dies.
One was beaten to Hell (he probably bought a replacement and put it in the box).
The one bad one had a bent de-primer pin which broke when I tried
to straighten it - hardened steel.
Can you buy those pins in gun stores ?
I E-Mailed RCBS and asked them about the pins.
The pin is held in by a threaded collet cap - as in a 'pin vise'.

DoctorBill

Bill; RCBS will send you 5-6 of the pins in an envelope at no charge, best customer service in the industry.

Daddyfixit
11-18-2010, 03:08 AM
OK, I got home and looked at my RCBS case trimmer, indeed all of "A" goes with it. I think that only three case holders marked 1, 2 & 3 came with it. If you look at piece marked "X" it should have a # stamped on the end ( 30, 35, ect for caliber) this is also for the RCBS case trimmer it goes on the blade end to hold the case being trimmed.
Could you remove the brass pieces from the bag so we can take a look?

old turtle - Yes, I do feel most guilty for having obtained these goodies without deserving them...
but I must endure the shame by myself and not burden others with it.

I have done penance by cleaning and polishing and sorting all that darned Brass that was cast upon me.
I cleaned off the RCBS Press of old hardened oil and grease - soooo nice.
I feel more guilty each day.....
If I am lucky again, I will be devastated ! ! !

I'd bet that if all of us put ALL of our reloading stuff in a big box, the box would be a lot bigger
than each of us might have imagined.

Oh...I do feel soooo bad.....
I'd rather reload in Hell than give up my guns in Heaven.

Daddyfixit - Thank you for that link !

Yes, "X" does have the number 35 on the end and it does fit into the
rotary blade center.

swheeler - Indeed ! I just received an E-Mail reply from RCBS and they are

Nice of them. I thought only LEE was nice like that...

Right now I must remove 16 studded snow tires from my barn and put them on our

Glad I had them mounted on wheels - just switching them is so much nicer than
having to pay $50 each vehicle to have the Street tires removed and the snow tires
mounted and balanced after 70 miles round trip into town for each vehicle.....waiting
an hour in the tire store reading crappy Liberal magazines and then repeat.....
Saves a butt-load of my time, money, gasoline and wear & tear on the tire's bead.

Finally I found a picture of what Chargar explained previously for "Unknown D".

http://www.mynetimages.com/c54c6da6c3.jpg

Both my powder chargers have the big heavy cast base with them for mounting
the charger all by it's lonesome.

Unknown D is if you wanted to attach the charger directly to the press.
Chargar just got it.

Just how consistently accurate do these powder chargers deliver loads ?
± what ? 1% 2% 3% 5% ?

BTW Three44's - someday I'll be taking up a landfill.....and meet the big Reloader in the sky.

You're one lucky guy! I also cruise CL for deals. A couple of years ago I scored almost 40 pounds (yes) of smokeless powder at a garage sale advertised there, along with some other goodies, including thousands of primers, for about $200.

And garage sales in the summer are good sources of stuff! My initial reloading tools, an RCBS Jr. press, powder measure, balance scale and some various dies were picked up for $25, and I sold the dies for more than that!

Yes you did very well. I was giveN about the same amount of reloading componets/powder/primers/presses/dies etc. Most of the primers were corroded and scrap.

It all went to my storage garage and over the past six months have gone through all the stuff.
I have given small reloading sets away to friends and family, sold very little and kept the bullets and powder I can use. Problem is what do you do with the rest of it?
Ebay is one alternative and craigs list. Ebay you will pay 20 percent of the sale including to Pay Pal that you must be a member of before you can sell.

I managed to snag "Unknown D" off Dr. Bill. It is a simple metal piece by which a powder measure can be mounted on top of a reloading press. You can throw a charge and move the charged case to the shell holder and seat a bullet forthwith. The powder measure can be located at any angle to the press. Here is is mounted on a vintage Pacific press holding a vintage Hollywood powder measure.

SciFiJim

That's actually a pretty nifty idea. I may have to make one for myself.

You know.....anyone could buy some 1/8th x 1.5 inch steel bar
real cheap (my favorite) at Lowes or The Home Depot and drill two
1/4 inch holes - then widen the holes with a Rat Tail File to the
appropriate diameter and then BEND the sucker to whatever shape
one wanted with a hammer and a vise and MAKE YOUR OWN !

Like SciFiJim says.....

Chargar - why not slightly bend that bar in a big vise such that the Powder Charger
sits vertically over the Brass Cases ? Beat on it until it does what you want....

Nope! No bang and bend, because the angle won't have any effect on the accuracy of the thrown charge. Also, I may want to use it on other presses with different angles and I like it at an angle as it makes it easier to reach under to place the charged case in the shell holder.

One hole is threaded and the other is not. I don[t think either one needs to be threaded. If a fellow had a 7/8" drill bit the holes would be a snap.

Anybody - for ANY reason.....CL is unsupervised.

Those reasons can be....meanness, revenge, anti-gun "thinking",
you being a competitor for an identical item, Trolling...whatever.

I had a self-appointed Craig's List "Cop" actually send her E-Mail

Yes, I understand completely. I guess I was trying to say that we have lots of old hippies or something around here who think like your "Craigslist Cop" and see it as their duty to rid the world of anything gun related.

At one time, I put a WTB ad on Craigslist looking for scrap lead (no mention of bullets) and it was repeatedly flagged and deleted. We were talking about Craigslist the other day during a break at school (local community college) and I griped to several of the guys around about my lead ad being removed.

I've been taking classes with these guys for a year and a half now. Most of them hunt or shoot to some degree, or have in the past. One of the guys, a navy vet who hunts (helluva smart guy, but pretty liberal), replied in his usual authoritative-know-it-all manner that "Well, you wouldn't want militias or terrorists to get hold of that stuff."

Stupid is as stupid does.

I think we are experiencing a plague of "Stupiditis Americanosis" infecting
way too many people. Dementia ?

Life is too easy for people here, now.

If you don't need to know squat to have a nice life, why bother learning anything ?

I see this in my younger students.

One young woman said to her lab partner, "I don't understand why
we have to get up and come in for an 8 O'Clock Lecture !
That is just too early...I'd rather sleep in."

BTW - she is a nursing student !

Can you imagine waking up in the Hospital after an accident and having
one of these young nurses looking down at you with a syringe or
catheter in her hand....?

God Help Us ! These people vote !

The worst thing I ever heard was an older California Woman who was "Helping"
our City Council set up a new official Book of Rules - we didn't have one.

I asked her why she was proposing all these new and restrictive environmental
rules for our Council to adopt say, "Well, it sounds like a good idea."

They bought the whole package. She was doing this for ALL the surrounding Townships.

She had left California to spread her Liberal poison far and wide.

It seems that the better we have it, the worst we become.

I read that that is what happened to the Roman Empire.

Are we next ?
