I have an older Lyman shellholder designated as X7...

I can't find any listed with this "X" in front of the number...

Anyone know what case this is to hold?...

Thanks...BCB

Ignore the X, it's a #7 shell holder.

I thought that might be the case, but I wasn't certain...

Ummm, you can always try a case and see how it fits...or contact Lyman.

I had been trying cases during the reloading process. I was/am having trouble with Starline brass with the #20 RCBS and the #11 Lee and Lyman...

The #7 is for the 44 Magnum and that rim is a couple thousands wider than the 45LC and I am still having trouble with the brass entering the shellholders easily. They catch--it is a mess and I am sending a few samples back to Starline...

I just wanted to be certain that the X7 was the same as the #7...

The early Lyman/Ideal shellholders were made in a proprietary design referred to as "J-type." They were used on most if not all of their presses up to the All American and Comet models. Once they "saw the writing on the wall," Lyman gave in and started making Universal (or RCBS style) shellholders and initially called them "X-type" to distinguish them from the Js until the latter were completely phased out. The numbers were the same for both types, so X-7 and J-7 are used for the same shell calibers. BTW, Lyman still sells an adapter so you can use the X-type holders on an older press.
