Went to a local gun store at lunch today and found an all # matching 91 argentine with a cut down stock and missing hand guard for $80.. The bore looked good so it came home with me.
I will try and post some pics tonight.

I may have to go pick up anothe he had. Its a 91 all orignal and all matching long rifle with a intact crest and like new bore. but he wants $450. he also has a 91 sporter in a pretty sporter stock with a weaver k4 on it for $250. I would have way to many toys if I had the $$$.

I love my 91. Carries like an old Pennsylvania long rifle, great rifle.

Afew weeks back a friend put me onto a `91 Argie engineer`s carbine. Been looking for a good example of this for a good while. When all the swearin and banging of fists on the counter coupled with the usual lament of them trying to make me starve till the next SS check comes - I bought it. All sales taxes included I paid $320. It has been wood re-finished, but still has "character" dings. The metal looks almost mint with no scratches or rust, all numbers but a floorplate match. Now I need to see how a 17 1/2" barrel shoots.Robert

Well Hardcast, I wish you the same luck I've had with mine! Surprised the heck out of me and my Brother with the way I kept smacking the metal targets we use. And this was with some OLD milsurp ammo. Can't wait to shoot some of my cast!

And that steel butt plate shouldn't bother you at all. I started with a slip on recoil pad over it then took the rubber pad off. Not a problem. I really like shooting that short little carbine - a LOT![smilie=l:

I found one some years back and turned it into a "scout" and named her "Evita". Besides being awesome with j bullets she is also superb with Lee's TL314090-SWC at 800 fps, the Lee C312-185-2R at 1850 fps and of course Lyman's 314299 at 1900 fps. I also have 2 other such cut M91s still in 7.65 and one I converted to .35 Remington. I also have a M91 rifle still original except mine has a scrubbed receiver. I also have a M1909 in 7.65 Argentine as it is an excellent cartridge.

Check those sporters for a Buehler safety. From what I hear they are worth their weight in gold.

I finnialy got a chance to shoot the 91 yesteday. I loaded some 150gn FMJ from pulled x54r over RL15 in reformed LC 62 match brass. Shot 2 5rnd groups offhand at 75 yds. wound up with one 1.25" and one .75" groups. I am very impressed as nomally the best i can do offhand is 2-3". This was shot with the issue sights. I may have found my new woods rifle...

A friend bought a very ratty sporterized 91 Mauser years ago intending to salvage the action for a custom rifle project and rebarrel in 7mm.

The bore was like a sewer pipe with little visible rifling.

For the heck of it he took it to the range and found despite the appearance of the bore it printed consistent 1.5 inch groups.

Since then he uses the old sporter as is for a back up deer rifle and loaner, it has harvested many a deer.
