Is there a gunsmithing for Dummies web site ot there the shows how to do a safe trigger job on a M N 91/30

As I was given one tonight
A guy down the road wanted part of a pickup load of Bovine Fecal Matter and straw mix

I told him if he loaded it , he could have it
The keys are in the skid steer
As I am working 6-6 again and didn't have the time

Well when I got to the barn tonigh around 7 PM to feed the calves
He had what he wanted and handed me a gun case and said thank you

Great looking rifle
But the trigger bottomed out my trigger pull gauge
Max weight shown is 16 lb and I was well past that before it is even close to going off

So I am looking for a how to , on doing a trigger job on 1

not much you can do with these from what i remember. check out huber concepts in fond du lac, wi. i remember them having a trigger with a roller in it that helps smooth things up.

You can get the Huber trigger orrrrrr.............You can polish/stone all mating surfaces, also you can polish the sear bar where the trigger rubs on it. Some folks even thin out the sear bar to reduce the weight a bit. Another thing to do is put a washer under the screw that holds the sear bar to the receiver. That will reduce your engagement. I also shimmed my trigger on either side as well with cartridge brass. My trigger was improved considerably with just these methods. I have 3 of them and for the money they are good. I killed 2 deer with an M91 I got for free!

A lot depends on how involved you want to get. Run a Google search, and you'll find enough information to keep you busy for hours. Here's a couple:

http://www.gswagner.com/mosin-nagant/trigger/mntrigger.html

http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2005/mosinnaganttrigger/index.asp

Something that none of these recommend: the hole for the trigger pin (the one IN the trigger) is unexplainably much, much larger than the pin itself, which has to go through the two lugs on the receiver. I found a pin that fits the hole in the trigger, and drilled out the two lugs to match. That greatly reduced the sideways slop in the trigger, and made it feel much more solid. This is, of course, a permanent modification.

Timney also offers a trigger for the Mosin now. However you go about it, improving the trigger on a Mosin will go a long, long way towards making it more enjoyable to shoot. Just be certain to keep things safe - many of the DIY trigger jobs involve reducing sear engagement. Be certain that you have enough sear engagement remaining to keep the rifle safe!

Its a easy job, See huber clone thread below. BUT YOU MUST ADJUST THE TRIGGER CORECTLY!! The rear of the bolt needs to be lifted when checking adjustment on a unloaded gun. mine would handle the drop test but would fire when the bolt was lifted at the rear. so make sure of your adjustments and get a bit rough with it to make sure its safe!!I belive my modified trigger to be the equil of the hubber trigger.
Again make sure of the adjustments or take to a gunsmith if you are not sure about how /what to check.............Buck

About 10 years ago I tried narrowing the trigger spring.
That is not a good idea for me.

Then I started putting tape under the sear. That works.

Look at this 2004 thread and scroll down to the pic of me pillar bedding a 91/30. Next to the stock you can see and action with tape under the sear.

Some guy brought over a 91/59 rifle for me to work on with a $60 Huber trigger.
I would not give 60 cents for that trigger.

Now Timney has a trigger for the 91/30 and it is not a $200 Jewel trigger, but for 91/30 fans, it might as well be. It comes with a safety.

I know a guy who has hunted with a 91/30 for 45 years. He just keeps his finger out of the trigger guard. It may be too late for him to change, but for the rest of us, the Timney is a game changer.

I wish I could have traded horse manure in high school for 91/30's....would have had a storage container of them :groner:

Anyway's I've tried the shim stock (alum can) method on a few of my 91/30's and it seemed to help but I've ended up stoning some surfaces to just smooth things out. A smooth trigger pull is more important to me than the weight (to a point)
